Why Do We Celebrate Labor Day?
Labor Day, an annual celebration of workers and their achievements, originated during one of American labor history’s most dismal chapters.
In the late 1800s, at the height of the Industrial Revolution in the United States, the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks to earn a basic living. Despite restrictions in some states, children as young as 5 or 6 toiled in mills, factories, and mines across the country, earning a fraction of their adult counterparts’ wages.
People of all ages, particularly the very poor and recent immigrants, often faced extremely unsafe working conditions, with insufficient access to fresh air, sanitary facilities, and breaks.
As manufacturing increasingly supplanted agriculture as the wellspring of American employment, labor unions, first appearing in the late 18th century, grew more prominent and vocal. They began organizing strikes and rallies to protest poor conditions and compel employers to renegotiate hours and pay.
The idea of a “workingmen’s holiday,” celebrated on the first Monday in September, caught on in industrial centers nationwide, and many states passed legislation recognizing it. Congress would not legalize the holiday until 12 years later, when in June 1894, the American Railway Union, led by Eugene V. Debs, called for a boycott of all Pullman railway cars, to add more power to a strike. It crippled railroad traffic nationwide. To break the Pullman strike, the federal government dispatched troops to Chicago, unleashing a wave of riots that resulted in the deaths of more than a dozen workers.
In the wake of this massive unrest and in an attempt to repair ties with American workers, Congress passed an act making Labor Day a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed it into law.

In The Amazing Spider-Man, volume 2, number 36, published on November 14, 2001, written by J. Michael Straczynski, Spider-Man said: “The sane world will always be vulnerable to madmen, because we cannot go where they go to conceive of such things. We could not see it coming. We could not be here before it happened. We could not stop it. But we are here now. You cannot see us for the dust, but we are here. You cannot hear us for the cries, but we are here.”
These Superheroes are ordinary men and women “made extraordinary by acts of compassion, and courage, and terrible sacrifice.”
Heroes are all around us. As Fred Rogers famously said " “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

| | Brockton Native Kelsey Cook Named Director of Denise Buote Dance Studio | | |
For Brockton native Kelsey Cook, a lifelong connection to dance has led to a new opportunity to help shape the future of a studio in the community where her own dance journey began.
Cook has been named Studio Director of Denise Buote Dance Studio, where she has been an instructor for more than five years. She first began dancing at age 3 at The Gold School in Brockton, later training and competing in ballet, tap, jazz, modern, and contemporary dance.
Alongside her career in dance, Cook is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) who works with children. Her experience has influenced her approach in the classroom, where she aims to create a positive and encouraging environment where young dancers can learn, build confidence, and feel comfortable being themselves.
“Dance has been part of my life since I was 3 years old, so having the opportunity to now lead a studio in the community where my own dance journey began is incredibly special,” Cook said. “As both a mom and a BCBA, I’m passionate about creating an environment where children feel comfortable being themselves, are excited to learn, and know that their individual successes are celebrated.”
| | |
As Studio Director, Cook plans to build on the foundation Denise Buote Dance Studio has established in Brockton while continuing to give dancers opportunities to develop their technique, confidence, creativity, friendships, and love of dance. She will work alongside a team of instructors who collectively bring more than 100 years of dance and teaching experience to the studio.
Denise Buote Dance Studio offers classes for children beginning at age 2, including ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, contemporary, and tumbling. For information about classes and registration, visit Denise Buote Dance Studio.
