Three Teens, Three Mascots, One Big T.A.G. Win
Raynham Public Library's Teen Advisory Group (T.A.G.) has three new faces, and all three came from local teen creativity.
When T.A.G. returned from its summer break on August 18, teens gathered for icebreakers and a creative activity: designing a mascot for their group. “T.A.G.: Teen Advisory Group is back from the summer!” the library announced in a post, inviting teens to get to know one another and design their very own group mascot.
The library recently announced the results, and after an unexpected three-way tie, it decided there was no reason to choose just one.
“After an astounding three-way tie, we decided to adopt all of them to represent our teens at the library!” the library shared in its latest announcement.
Meet Terry the Duck, designed by Willow Benvissuto; Tina the Red Panda, designed by Amy Chaves; and Thomas the Lion, designed by Alexia Haikola.
Each mascot brings its own personality to T.A.G. Terry the Duck can be seen holding up a book while wearing a T.A.G. shirt, while Tina the Red Panda sits atop an open book. Thomas the Lion sports a distinctive mane around his face.
The library says the three mascots will be appearing on things related to T.A.G., giving the teen group three original characters created by members of its own community.
What started as one mascot-design activity ended with three young artists seeing their creations become part of the library's teen identity. Sometimes, a tie really can mean everybody wins.

Why Do We Celebrate Labor Day?
Labor Day, an annual celebration of workers and their achievements, originated during one of American labor history’s most dismal chapters.
In the late 1800s, at the height of the Industrial Revolution in the United States, the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks to earn a basic living. Despite restrictions in some states, children as young as 5 or 6 toiled in mills, factories, and mines across the country, earning a fraction of their adult counterparts’ wages.
People of all ages, particularly the very poor and recent immigrants, often faced extremely unsafe working conditions, with insufficient access to fresh air, sanitary facilities, and breaks.
As manufacturing increasingly supplanted agriculture as the wellspring of American employment, labor unions, first appearing in the late 18th century, grew more prominent and vocal. They began organizing strikes and rallies to protest poor conditions and compel employers to renegotiate hours and pay.
The idea of a “workingmen’s holiday,” celebrated on the first Monday in September, caught on in industrial centers nationwide, and many states passed legislation recognizing it. Congress would not legalize the holiday until 12 years later, when in June 1894, the American Railway Union, led by Eugene V. Debs, called for a boycott of all Pullman railway cars, to add more power to a strike. It crippled railroad traffic nationwide. To break the Pullman strike, the federal government dispatched troops to Chicago, unleashing a wave of riots that resulted in the deaths of more than a dozen workers.
In the wake of this massive unrest and in an attempt to repair ties with American workers, Congress passed an act making Labor Day a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed it into law.

In The Amazing Spider-Man, volume 2, number 36, published on November 14, 2001, written by J. Michael Straczynski, Spider-Man said: “The sane world will always be vulnerable to madmen, because we cannot go where they go to conceive of such things. We could not see it coming. We could not be here before it happened. We could not stop it. But we are here now. You cannot see us for the dust, but we are here. You cannot hear us for the cries, but we are here.”
These Superheroes are ordinary men and women “made extraordinary by acts of compassion, and courage, and terrible sacrifice.”
Heroes are all around us. As Fred Rogers famously said " “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

Climate Can Do - Carpooling!
Looking for an easy way to save the environment and money? Look no further than carpooling! Seemingly simple in nature, the act of carpooling and sharing a ride with co-workers, friends, and others has a profound impact on both our ecosystems and wallets. Carpooling reduces carbon footprints and improves air quality while simultaneously lowering overall fuel costs, and in some cases qualifying eligible participants for tax incentives! For more information on carpooling, van-pooling, and other alternatives, visit Mass.Gov.

Understanding Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Misinformation
Sat, Sep 26
11:00a-12:00p
Meeting Room at Raynham Public Library, 760 S. Main St.
Misinformation is nothing new, but artificial intelligence is changing how quickly misleading information can be created and shared. From AI-generated images and videos to realistic-looking written content, new technology has made it increasingly important to understand where information comes from and how to recognize content that may not be trustworthy.
The Raynham Public Library will bring that conversation to the community with “Understanding Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Misinformation.” The program will be led by journalist Philip Eil, who will discuss how AI is being used to create and spread misinformation and what people can do to navigate an information landscape shaped by the technology.
The program will explore questions many people are beginning to encounter in everyday life: What exactly is AI? What is misinformation? How can AI-generated content affect society, and how can people become better at recognizing it? Eil will also discuss efforts to regulate AI and ways individuals can stay vigilant when evaluating the information they encounter.
Registration is required. For more information or to register, visit the Raynham Public Library event page.

Hometown Resident Eric Dolloff Joins Local Fire Department
For Eric Dolloff, joining the Raynham fire department marks the beginning of a new chapter in a career dedicated to serving others. Raised in town, Dolloff recently became a Nationally Registered Paramedic and has now joined the department as a member of Group 2.
Dolloff joined the department last month and completed the department’s orientation program before receiving his Group 2 assignment last week. His arrival adds a new member to the team while bringing someone with roots in the community into a role focused on helping his neighbors.
His training will continue this winter, when Dolloff is scheduled to attend the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy. The academy will provide another step in his development as he continues building his career in fire and emergency medical services.
For Dolloff, the opportunity to serve is also a return to the community where he was raised. His path from hometown resident to Nationally Registered Paramedic and now firefighter, reflects a growing commitment to public service.
The department shared the news of Dolloff’s arrival with the community, congratulating him on his accomplishments and welcoming him to what they called “the best job in the world.”
As Dolloff begins his work with the department and prepares for the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy this winter, community members have an opportunity to welcome a familiar hometown face to the team and wish him well in the next stage of his training.
