The Order of Malta in Action: Vital Support for the Crisis in Ukraine
"So many people have turned shock into concrete action."
Dominik Brichta, Slovakian Relief Service

As the tragedy in Ukraine continues, more lives are being lost, homes, hospitals and schools destroyed, and the number of refugees and displaced people has grown to well over two million.
Electricity and water supplies are scarce, the destruction of roads and vital infrastructure make it almost impossible for people to reach food and medical care.

The Order of Malta is recognised in the Ukraine and in the surrounding region as a trusted, essential and frontline provider of food, medical care and social assistance to the most vulnerable people. This is the work the Order has carried out for centuries, these are the people who need our help now.
The Order of Malta is well positioned to respond to this crisis and to the longer-term care of the victims of this catastrophe. The bodies of the Order in the affected countries are skilled and experienced in caring for those in need. The Global Fund for Forgotten People has been involved in the development of the Order’s work in the region for over a decade. The country-by-country, rapid and substantial response to this crisis demonstrates the fruits of that investment. We are committed to source and coordinate support through the Order’s networks.

The Order's work continues in the face of destruction
Despite the current crisis, the Ukrainian Relief Service has continued to deliver many of their projects.
The Ukrainian Relief Service runs a permanent soup kitchen, as well as a ‘meals on wheels’ outreach service providing nutritious meals to isolated elderly people every week.
This project in Lviv, supported by the Fund, has cared for vulnerable and immobile elderly people in Ukraine for 30 years.

Reports from the Frontline: The Order of Malta's Response to the Crisis in Ukraine
On Tuesday 8 March, the Fund hosted a Zoom conference for senior members and supporters of the Order of Malta on the Order’s response to the Ukraine crisis.
The Grand Hospitaller opened the call, assuring the support of the Grand Magestry for Ukraine. He was followed by Clemens von Mirbach-Harff who provided details of the Order's response through Malteser International.
Olga Bilichenko and the executive board of the Ukrainian Relief Service gave a moving account of the suffering in Ukraine. Dominik Brichta of the Slovakian Relief Service gave an equally emotive account of events on the Slovakian border with Ukraine.
If you would like to see the recording of this call, please email Poppy Gill, Communications Officer.

This crisis has many people asking 'what is the Order of Malta?'
The Fund has created a new film explaining how the Order of Malta serves the world's neediest. Separated by geography and facing different challenges it shows the many works of the Order united under one flag in our commitment to serve the sick and the poor, and to do it with compassion and love.
The film is available on our YouTube channel in Italian, French, Spanish, German, Modern Standard Arabic and, soon, in Cantonese.
