The Elmwood Post Office on 734 Bedford St. was established in 1861, while President Abraham Lincoln was in office and is one of the oldest continuous use post offices in the country. The Elmwood Post Office was created so that they could ship shoes out to soldiers during the Civil War, that began in 1861.
George Mitchell sold this building in 1838, the same year it was built. It was a general store for nearly 150 years, and the hall on the top floor was used by the Swedenborgian Church to hold meetings. Other groups also met in this building, holding meetings, events and even dances. For a time, the post office shared space with Flagg's Antiques.

Climate Can Do:
Reduce, Reuse, and Upcycle
One of the many ways that we can help against climate change is to reduce our consumption, reuse pieces that we already have, and upcycle them to make something new. Often we are quick to throw things out that we are no longer using, but why not give things a second life and keep them out of the landfills?
Ways to Reduce, Reuse, and Upcycle
- Before throwing something away, consider if you or someone else could use it again in the same or different way. Passing things on to friends, selling on marketplaces, or donating them are all ways to give something another life.
- Avoiding overconsumption is challenging, but being mindful of new purchases curbs the amount of new things being made.
- Upcycling is taking something old and making it into something new! These projects can be practical, creative and fun!
- Feel the need to shop? Going thrifting and buying second hand is a fun way to get your shopping fix in and find unusual items, inexpensively.
- The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of the world’s carbon emissions and consumes 10% of all water used industrially worldwide. (Sustainable Harvest International)
- Shop close to home and within your community. People often resell or give away things they do not need anymore. It could be just what you are looking for!
The more we reduce our consumption of products, reuse and upcycle, the more we keep out of landfills and we lower production in the first place. This also saves you money while helping to keep the environment safe for us humans.

Together, we can make a difference by taking action to live sustainably. Let's empower ourselves to create a better future for our planet, one step at a time.

East Bridgewater's Leap Towards Sustainability:
Securing a $200,000 Grant for Greener Futures
The Town of East Bridgewater is going green this year! Town administrator Charlie Seelig announced that due to the help of the Old Colony Planning Council, the Town has been awarded a $200,000 grant from the state's Department of Energy Resources. (DER) DER's popular Green Communities Program gives grant funding as Massachusetts moves toward clean energy allowing areas such as East Bridgewater reduce long term energy costs and strengthen their local economy.
The funds will tackle multiple projects throughout the Town. This includes $50,336 for work on weatherization measures at East Bridgewater Public Library, $100,000 for LED lighting divided between Mitchell Middle School and East Bridgewater Junior/Senior High School, and $32,651 for work on motors and variable frequency drives at the Town hall. The complex green project will be completed before the year is up which will allow the Town to apply for funding once again in 2025.
|
|
With grant applications being extremely complicated and the Green Communities grant being competitive, East Bridgewater is very lucky to receive such large funding for these important projects. With the help of these funds the Town is addressing climate change and making Massachusetts a healthier place to live. By saving money and energy, East Bridgewater moves closer to its climate goals each year!

Re-Birth
“Getting a second life is one thing. Making a better life, that's the trick.”
~ Rick Riordan, The Blood of Olympus
“i learnt from the autumn leaves, the formula of healing.
every year, they break, fall off the trees and die.
and then again in a few months, they find their way back home.
reborn, living a new life just to die again.
but never did that stop them growing again.
so why can't we humans just live up to them.
fall, get hurt, bear pain but have enough
courage and energy to stand up and fight back again.” ~ Renesmee Stormer
|
As the buds dare to show themselves on the tips of these bare branches, and slowly we see color emerge from forsythia and daffodils; once again we succumb to re-birth, as a child pushed crying from the womb.
We grow a year wiser, encouraged to see the earth and it's inhabitants through a new lens. What shall we do better in 2024? In what ways shall WE grow?
~ Jacquie
