You are a Source of Light

“Imagine you walked onto a large open field at night when there was no moon. Standing there silently in the darkness were hundreds of people, each holding an unlit candle. Only you were carrying a candle that was burning, a single light alone.

How quickly would the field be glowing once you used your candle to light the others, and they used their candles to do the same, and all the people began sharing their light with those around them? How quickly?

You may never know exactly, but you do know over time what the outcome will be: a field aglow in the darkness where people can see one another clearly.

Your life matters. What you have started will carry on. You are a source of light. You help others in ways that will continue. You are a single candle, but you are stronger than the darkness.”

Celebrating Solar at Epiphany

During the Season of Epiphany, we are reminded time and again of God’s light shining into the world’s darkness in wondrous and unexpected ways. It seems especially fitting, then, that this January we were finally able to put our long-anticipated solar installation into service—a visible reminder of God’s light and its power to transform energy for the good of all creation.

Earlier this month we gathered in the courtyard to celebrate this milestone and to dedicate the solar installation to the glory of God. It was a joyful expression of thanksgiving for the many blessings we have received and a reaffirmation of our shared commitment to care for God’s creation.

Though the solar panels themselves are not visible from ground level, we can watch the energy they produce—and even on chilly winter days, the system is already generating clean, sustainable power.

We are thankful for every member of the Epiphany community who believed in this work, saw its importance, and shared your time, gifts, and resources to make this project possible.

Catherine D. Harvey Legacy Fund Grants Awarded

The Catherine D. Harvey Legacy Fund was created to assist with meeting the basic needs of individuals and families and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential for self-sufficiency. The Episcopal Church Women of the Church of the Epiphany oversee the administration of the Fund, reviewing community applications and advising the Vestry on grant awards. This year, the Harvey Fund distributed a total of $22,500 to seven deserving local organizations:

  • A Home for Everyone: $5,000
  • Jumpstart Automotive Training Center: $4,000
  • Nicholas House: $4,000
  • Our House: $4,000
  • Emmaus House: $3,000
  • Gateway: $1,500
  • Decatur Cooperative Ministry, Hagar’s House: $1,000

Harvey Fund grants are separate from our annual Community Engagement budget and represent additional support that this parish contributes to community organizations each year.

We will be highlighting the important work of this year’s grant recipients in upcoming editions of the Community Engagement Quarterly.

Spreading the Love this Valentine's Day

This month our regularly scheduled meal with friends at Gateway fell on Valentine’s Day weekend. In addition to sharing dinner with residents, Epiphany volunteers packed bags of sweet treats to spread the love during our time together.

If you would like to learn more about Epiphany’s meal ministries or are interested in volunteering to cook and share a meal with our neighbors experiencing homelessness, please contact Gateway co-chair Sally Walker.

Help Still Needed in Minnesota

Bishop Craig Loya, Bishop of The Episcopal Church in Minnesota, has asked for donations to support Casa Maria, the diocese's primary engine of underground care and subversive love, which is providing much-needed food, supplies, and community to the most vulnerable.
