Life is an ever-rolling stream. As we float along, the myriad currents bring people into our lives, only to carry them off again in divergent directions. It is this dynamic of life that brings the news that Katie West will be moving on from the Division in early January to pursue new adventures.
While Katie has only been with us for a little less than five years, her imprint on the organization has been considerable. Taking on social media and public relations when she first arrived, she also spearheaded an effort to bring Delaware presenters together through meetings and regular communication channels. Within a year, she had taken charge of the agency’s grant application and review processes, managing all organization grants. Under her leadership, the Division launched into its newest technological feat, the implementation of our new grants management system, smARTDE.
We will greatly miss Katie for her positive energy, expansive knowledge, and consummate professionalism. While we do plan to re-fill the position through the
Delaware Employment Link, once we’re authorized to do so, we know Katie’s will be a tough act to follow.
We are preparing to wish Katie the best, but in the meantime, we’ll do all we can to get as much work out of her as we can in her remaining months with us!

The Division's new smARTDE online system is open! smARTDE offers a much more robust, user-friendly, and stable platform for all users – grant applicants, reviewers, onsite evaluators, and staff. All of the previously submitted grant application data has been transferred to smARTDE.

There is no better time to take stock in the value of the arts in economic development, education, and quality of life, than during National Arts and Humanities Month. In my 22 years with the Division of the Arts, I have been impressed with the support that the arts receive in Delaware at both the state and federal level. Having served under four governors and an ever-changing state legislature, the recognition of the importance the arts play in our lives remains constant, due in large part, to the great work of the arts community and the valiant efforts of the Delaware Arts Alliance and advocates across the state.
Recently, Americans for the Arts released their
2018 Congressional Report Card, identifying pro-arts legislators at the national level.
Delaware was identified as one of the “Lucky 13,” states that received both 100% pro-arts grades of B or better in the House, and
double “Thumbs Up” in the Senate. Delaware is fortunate to have leaders who recognize that the arts are not a nicety, they are a necessity.
From Yorklyn to Selbyville, and Hartly to Bowers Beach, opportunities in the arts abound. This month and throughout the year, show your support for the arts by taking time to take in a concert, visit an exhibition, go to a festival, or attend a play. I promise, you’ll be glad you did!

Established Professional, Visual Arts: Sculpture
|
Sculptor Dennis Beach began his studies as an engineer, a skill that enables him to transform wood – his material of choice – into the sinuous and complex shapes that are his hallmarks. Keenly observing nature, Beach likes to abstract and synthesize its shapes, colors and repetitions into works that are “both visually exciting and contemplative.”

Shannon Connor Winward’s potent imagination, one that is spiced with a love of magic and the unexplained, gives the Newark resident the freedom and impetus to write her way into other worlds. Believing that we are “all in between one version of our self and another,” Winward writes works that feature themes of myth, magic and spirituality.

In the Studio by
Charles Allan Guerin
|
Still Life with Pileated Woodpecker and Yellow Pencil, 2018, Prismacolor pencil on paper, 22″ x 30″
|
|
In the Studio, an exhibition of drawings by Charles Allan Guerin, will be on view in the Mezzanine Gallery from October 5-26, 2018. Guerin received a 2018 Honorable Mention from the Delaware Division of the Arts for his works on paper. The artist will host a free opening reception on Friday, October 5 from 5-7 p.m. Complimentary wine tastings provided courtesy of Breakthru Beverage Delaware, in partnership with Out & About.
Guerin’s current drawings are pure trompe-l’oeil, a slight-of-hand mixture of the real with the illustrated; two-dimensional perspective with three-dimensional illusion. They are still life drawings that capture the process of drawing, mixing the subject with the resulting drawings, but in a setting typical of the daily work environment of the studio. In these works, the viewer loses sight of the reality of what is depicted as the subject often becomes confused with content and process.
|
|
The Mezzanine Gallery, open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is located in the
Carvel State Office Building, 820 N. French Street, Wilmington.
