Board of County Commissioners

MEETING RECAP

September 29, 2026

This communication provides a summary of the key actions and highlights from the most recent public meeting of the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC).

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

FY27 Opioid Restitution Fund Grant Awards Approved

The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) approved FY27 Opioid Restitution Fund grant awards recommended by the Office of Grant Management. The funding includes support for community-based prevention initiatives serving children and families, as well as the Washington County Sheriff’s Office Employee Wellness Program.

The Office of Grant Management received eight applications from community organizations for prevention programming. Following staff review, funding was recommended for eligible programs that align with Maryland’s Opioid Restitution Fund requirements and support evidence-based or evidence-informed strategies to address the impacts of the opioid crisis.

The Sheriff’s Office funding will support an Employee Wellness Program focused on the secondary and cumulative trauma experienced by personnel responding to opioid overdoses, overdose deaths and related incidents. The approved awards will be funded through restricted Opioid Restitution Funds and will have no fiscal impact on Washington County.

FY27 Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) Cardiac Device Grant Approved

The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) approved the submission of the FY27 Cardiac Device Grant application through the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) and authorized acceptance of awarded funding. The grant will support the Division of Emergency Services in purchasing the latest version of the LifePak cardiac monitor/defibrillator and continuing the replacement of outdated LP 15 devices.

The cardiac monitors are used by emergency medical personnel to assess cardiac patients and provide critical, lifesaving interventions, including defibrillation, cardioversion and pacing. The grant requires a 50% local match, which will be provided through the Division of Emergency Services’ FY27 operating budget.

The approved grant application will provide additional resources for updated cardiac equipment used by Emergency Services in responding to life-threatening cardiac emergencies.
