After retiring, Tom was looking for a way to stay active, use his hands, and continue making a difference. At his brother Mark’s suggestion, he “blew the dust off the tool belt” and joined Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity’s construction crew leaders a little over a year ago. Today, Tom enjoys putting his skills to work alongside fellow volunteers and seeing firsthand the difference their efforts make for local families.

“I appreciate the opportunity to contribute to the welfare of others and the pleasure of seeing the results of the work of our hands.”

A safe home shouldn’t be out of reach because of the cost of necessary repairs. Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity’s Affordable Repairs program helps income-qualified homeowners complete critical improvements that make their homes safer, more accessible, and better preserved for the future.

In 2026, the program has already completed nine repair projects for local homeowners.

If you or someone you know is struggling to afford necessary home repairs, we encourage you to learn more about the Affordable Repairs program and see if you qualify. Together, we can help more homeowners stay safely in the homes they love.
