River Walk 2023
June 4th, from 10a–2p
all along River Street
This year's River Walk event is coming up on Sunday, June 2nd from 10a to 2p!
Come out and enjoy a pedestrian-friendly opportunity to celebrate the outdoors, and take in some of West Bridgewater’s spectacular open spaces, rich history and farming heritage.
This event is run by the West Bridgewater Open Space Committee and the Old Bridgewater Historical Society, who are working hard to schedule a fun-filled day for all residents. As always, the event will take place on the car-free River Street. Anyone is welcome to walk or bike through the free event, but make sure you bring cash for food and other purchases.
There will be numerous activities for all ages, as well as several organizations that will be making an appearance. This year's live music will consist of multiple artists including Acoustic Idiots, Ric Allendorf, Massachusetts Walking Tour, and Dennis & Dennis. You can listen to Ric Allendorf sing Open Book and the Massachusetts Walking Tour performance in the West Bridgewater Public Library from 2015 below.
We hope you are as excited as we are for River Walk 2023! It is going to be a blast!

There will be local crafters, non-profits and food vendors, including the famous Lobster Rolls from the First Church, Wicked Flavah Food Truck, Lady Sunshine Coffee Truck, and of course, Perry’s Last Stand for Ice Cream.
Kayaks and canoes will be available to paddle thanks to the generous donations of area businesses. Stop by the Kayak Launch at Pratt’s Landing to take one for a spin.
We will have 4 musical groups performing this year. Acoustic Idiots will return for another year. They will be joined by Ric Allendorf, Dennis and Dennis, and the Massachusetts Walking Tour.
There will be a kids area, yoga in the park, yard games and demonstrations on wood turning and Maple Sugaring. Live animals at Daddy’s Home Grown, Howard Farmworks, as well as New England Wildlife Centers will joining us this year.

The History of
Little League
Pictured: Carl Stotz with Harold "Major" Gehron and Jimmy Gehron
|
In 1938, a man named Carl Stotz hit upon the idea for an organized baseball league for the boys in his hometown of Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Carl had no sons of his own, but he often played ball with his young nephews, Jimmy and Major Gehron, and wanted a way to provide an organized program for them.
Carl gathered several of the neighborhood children and experimented with different types of equipment and different field dimensions during that summer. The program still did not have a name, and no games were played.
In 1939, Carl and his wife Grayce took the experiment a step further, enlisting the help of brothers George and Bert Bebble and their wives, Annabelle and Eloise, respectively. The three first teams were: Lycoming Dairy, Lundy Lumber and Jumbo Pretzel.
On June 6, 1939, in the very first Little League game ever played, Lundy Lumber defeated Lycoming Dairy, 23-8. Lycoming Dairy came back to win the season's first-half title, and faced second-half champ Lundy Lumber in a best-of-three series. Lycoming Dairy won the final game of the series, 3-2.
In the following years, other programs emulating the first Little League sprung up. Boundaries for each league were established to ensure each league could thrive without worrying about neighboring programs "raiding" its players.
From those humble beginnings, Little League Baseball has become the world's largest organized youth sports program. In the space of just six decades, Little League grew from three teams to nearly 200,000 teams, in all 50 U.S. states and more than 80 countries.
And the basic goal remains the same as it did in 1939, to give the children of the world a game that provides fundamental principles (sportsmanship, fair play and teamwork) they can use later in life to become good citizens.

It's For the Birds!
With all of the lovely chirping that greets each new spring day, it's time to give tribute to our feathery companions.
"The bird is powered by its own life and by its motivation." ~ A. P. J. Abdul Kalam
"It's best to have failure happen early in life. It wakes up the Phoenix bird in you so you rise from the ashes." ~ Anne Baxter
"The bird fights its way out of the egg. The egg is the world. Whoever will be born must destroy a world." ~ Hermann Hesse
"God gives every bird its food, but He does not throw it into its nest." ~ Josiah Gilbert Holland

Once, I came home from high school and found a dead pheasant and shattered glass all over my bed. So determined on his course was he, that he ran through my ground floor window. I don't know what the Universe was trying to tell me. I didn't know back then how to listen. That's one heck of a dropped call! ~ Jacquie
