Dear Kinhaven Family,
It's hard to believe we are already at the half-way point of Senior Session - the summer has been absolutely whizzing by (pun intended: softball games have been quite lively)!
We want to take a brief moment to thank you and share our sincere appreciation for all you do for Kinhaven - we truly wouldn't be here without you. Your support sustains not only our programs but also the spirit of community, creativity, and growth that defines Kinhaven. We are so grateful for your belief in our mission and your commitment to helping us carry it forward!
This spring, when we announced our plan to honor Peter, Mary, and Carolyn's remarkable legacy by naming three spaces on campus (for the first time in Kinhaven history!), we felt our incredible community come together and respond with vibrant energy and we are so grateful: we are delighted to share that in just three months, we have reached a milestone of one-third towards our ambitious $150,000 goal!
As we now prepare for Carolyn, Mary, and Peter to retire, we invite you to help us climb even higher in these last weeks of Senior Session. This is our moment to say thank you—to celebrate lives of service and the deep roots they’ve planted at Kinhaven.
These rooms will become permanent tributes—reminders for future generations of the love, dedication, and excellence Peter, Mary, and Carolyn brought to Kinhaven every single day.
- The Carolyn Wahl Horn Room
- The Mary Watt Reed Room
- The Peter Schultz Flute Room
Gifts of $1,000 or more will be recognized on dedication plaques inside each room. All gifts, no matter the size, will be acknowledged in a public tribute, along with any personal messages shared in honor of Peter, Mary, and Carolyn.
Please join us in honoring Peter, Mary, and Carolyn by making a gift in their name. Your generosity will help preserve their legacy for generations of Kinhaven students to come.
And we hope to see you on Saturday, July 12th — in person or online — for a very special Kinhaven Faculty Concert as we honor and celebrate our three beloved Kinhaven legends: Carolyn Wahl, Mary Watt, and Peter Schultz.
With heartfelt thanks,
Tony Mazzocchi and Deborah Buck, Co-Executive Directors

A Tribute to Carolyn Wahl
from Julie Landsman
Carolyn Wahl and Kinhaven have been an integral part of the success of our horn students.
Carolyn often made stops along the way while driving from Florida to Kinhaven. My home in New York was enroute, where I had some wonderful encounters with Carolyn and her Florida horn students. Kevin Rivard and Geoffrey Pilkington were a few of her talented students who were Kinhaven bound. Both become my Juilliard students, and both are now principal horn stars in the San Francisco Opera and Washington National Opera, respectively.
How lucky for the music world that Kinhaven has nurtured so many young rising stars!
With Carolyn’s expert attention and care, these young players have thrived and grown. We are a winning combo!

A Tribute to Mary
From Katie Eaton
Studying with Mary Watt changed me not only as an oboist but also as a person. I walked into Senior Session in 2016 with no idea what to expect, and quickly met Mary. From then on, she was a constant presence and impact in my life. In my first summer, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to pursue music professionally, but that summer fundamentally altered the course of my life, and my time with Mary played a large part in that. My lessons, chamber coachings, and reed classes showed me that I could succeed as an oboist. As I went on to become a staff member, some of my most cherished memories were the discussions Mary and I shared, often in the library or her studio. All oboists who study with Mary know about her infamous red reeds; they just sound better! One summer, I gave it a try, and now I am often found playing red reeds!
Mary’s generosity and kindness helped me to become the person and musician I am today, and I could not be more grateful for the time I was able to spend with her. Kinhaven is a better place because of the impact that she has had, and her contributions and legacy will be felt for many years to come.

A Tribute to Peter
from Kate Davison
Peter is Kinhaven. Although the grounds feel like they have magical coordinates, we all know Kinhaven’s greatness comes from its people and especially the faculty. I can’t come up with a singular favorite memory with Peter because there are far too many: watching the Marcel Moyse documentary and eating junk food in the library, the flute naming ceremony, playing Boismortier quintets, laughing a the “broblens” sign, lessons that changed how I saw the world and flute playing, the list goes on.
Peter instilled in me what the Dushkins always wanted - learning how to live, appreciate each other, and love through music. He is devoted to his students like no other. Peter, thank you for being a musical giant and a larger than life, silly, absurd, and brilliant flutist and teacher. I am who I am because of you!
