Vallejo, CA - Light rain on Wednesday and Thursday morning delayed the application of polyester concrete and methacrylate on the bridge, which has extended the temporary closure to pedestrians and bicyclists through October 30, 2026. This additional time will allow crews to complete essential bridge deck maintenance.
Beginning Monday, October 26, 2026, traffic will shift back to the left (south) side of the bridge to support ongoing work. The bridge will remain closed to pedestrians and bicyclists from 7 a.m. on Monday, October 26, until 5:15 p.m. on Friday, October 30.
A replacement part for the broken coupling has been located and ordered. Once it arrives at the end of October, it will have to be milled to the exact specification. The Public Works team is optimistic that the bridge will be available for normal marine traffic by November 13, 2025. Public Works is also coordinating repairs to address the bridge imbalance. This work will require a full bridge closure for approximately four to six hours, with scheduling to be announced once finalized.
In addition, the contractor is preparing for the reinstallation of the refurbished Mare Island Naval Base medallion. This effort will require a two-day bridge closure to allow for crane placement. The closure is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, November 18, and Thursday, November 19. Public Works is working with the contractor to determine whether the two required closures can be combined to reduce disruption to the community.
During weekday work hours between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., crews will apply polyester concrete and methacrylate, both of which are high-performance materials used to strengthen and extend the life of the bridge. These products contain chemicals classified as carcinogenic and may produce strong odors that could cause headaches, nausea, or irritation. For safety, the bridge and the trails beneath it will remain fully closed to pedestrians and bicyclists while this work is underway.
Alternative routes for pedestrians and bicyclists include:
-
The San Francisco Bay Ferry (Mare Island to Vallejo Terminal). Schedule information is available at https://www.sfbayferry.com/routes-schedules/vallejo/
- The Highway 37 Napa River Bridge, approximately a 2.6 mile detour
-
Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to visit the City’s ADA webpage, email ada@cityofvallejo.net, or contact Public Works at (707) 648 5235 for assistance
The City of Vallejo appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation as these critical improvements move forward. This work is essential to ensuring the long-term safety, resilience, and reliability of one of Vallejo’s key transportation links.
