Things Change
I was wheeling out the garbage and recycle cans the other night and started thinking about how much life has changed in my lifetime and how much we take for granted. Starting with the handling of garbage itself.

We were a six-person household and all our garbage fit into a 35-gallon galvanized steel garbage can that we lined with old newspapers and had a detachable lid that inevitable clattered to the ground as you attempted to put the bag in and remove the lid without putting down the bag. The garbage can was carried to the curb once a week after stomping on the trash to fit in the last of the weeks refuse. The garbage truck was driven up the street in the pre-dawn hours with a couple of garbagemen holding onto the side of the truck, when the truck stopped the garbage men would jump off the truck and grab their garbage cans that were hooked on the back and go about emptying the household cans into their cans. The garbage man’s can was a large and on wheels with a large looping handle on it, the handle was used for the garbage man to put over his shoulder to flip the can into the back of the truck and to transport the can. In my youth the garbage was dumped into a hopper in the back of the garbage truck, but I was told that this was progress as the garbage men that worked the trucks before the hopper had to climb a ladder with these huge, loaded cans on their backs and dump them over the side of the truck.

I can remember being a young man heading out to catch the bus to high school early in the morning and hearing the rumble of the garbage truck coming up the street. Seeing those men hustling up the block pushing the tools of their trade and thinking what a great job. These guys start work early in the morning, work hard, and get off work in the early afternoon and have the rest of the day off. In reality, they were probably too tired to enjoy their afternoons.

This is what I was thinking when I wheeled out the cans last week. How much has changed in this one small part of our lives. The basic household task of processing trash, both in our homes and for garbage company. The process now consists of pulling a plastic bag out of either the garbage or recycling bin. Taking the plastic bag out to the large plastic can, flipping open the lid and dropping it in. Once a week, the plastic can is wheeled out to the curb. Later that day the garbage truck comes up the street, one for each can. The truck has a driver handling the whole process, he hooks onto the can mechanically that lifts it up and dumps it into the truck.

Things change, we adapt, life goes on.
