Delaware Division of the Arts to Receive American Rescue Plan Funds
The National Endowment for the Arts announced on April 29 that the Delaware Division of the Arts will receive $753,000 in federal funding through the American Rescue Plan (ARP). These emergency funds are designed to support and assist Delaware’s arts sector as it recovers from the devastating impact of COVID-19.
Funds can be used to support arts organizations' ongoing operational costs, staffing, and re-opening costs associated with COVID precautions. Additional eligible expenses that can be covered include marketing and promotion costs associated with re-opening and resuming public programming. Some funding will also be available to individual artists for programming and projects that serve the public. This award is part of the $135 million allocated for the Arts Endowment in the ARP which represents a significant commitment to the arts and a recognition of the value of the arts and culture sector to the nation’s economy and recovery.
"This funding, made possible through the American Rescue Plan, provides much-needed relief for our arts organizations and artists to help them survive this pandemic," said U.S. Senator Tom Carper. "Our museums, cultural institutions, theatres and venues are truly special places that have, for generations, provided education and special memories. It's on all of us to ensure we continue to support the arts and our talented community members that make the arts come alive."
The Arts Endowment's first round of federal funding represents 40 percent of the total allotment to the arts in the ARP. The remaining 60 percent of the ARP money will be awarded by the Endowment directly to non-profit organizations to help support jobs in the arts sector, keep the doors open to arts organizations nationwide, and assist the field in its response to and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. In June, the NEA will announce the guidelines and application materials for the second phase of ARP funding for the arts, pending review.

I am pleased to announce that the Division of the Arts has a new Marketing/Communications program officer! After an extensive search, we are fortunate to have Kaitlin Ammon join us as the newest member of the staff.
Originally from Pennsylvania, Kaitlin returned to the east coast after spending the past 10 years in Texas. Most recently, Kaitlin served as the Site Manager of the Sam Bell Maxey House State Historic Site, a site owned and operated by the Texas Historical Commission, for eight years after spending two years as the site’s curator and interpreter. Before that, Kaitlin worked at Pennsbury Manor as an Education Intern and the Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks as an Education Intern and the Visitor Services Internship Coordinator. Kaitlin earned her master’s degrees in Management and Leadership from Western Governors University and Museum Education from The University of the Arts and her bachelor’s degree in History with a dual concentration in Public History and Social Studies Education from Mercyhurst University.
With the Division’s new strategic plan set for implementation this summer, Kaitlin’s arrival is none too soon! We are excited about sharing the full findings of the strategic planning process, the plan itself, and the aspirations we have for reaching new audiences, engaging untapped creative enterprises, and expanding our commitment to access and inclusion.
I would be remiss too, if I didn’t give a shout out to Roxanne Stanulis who was an invaluable asset during the interim. We are all glad to have Kaitlin with us, but I’m sure no one more so than Roxanne!

Delaware Division of the Arts Secures New Funding for Creative Aging
The Delaware Division of the Arts recently received a $60,000 grant from Leveraging State Investments in Creative Aging, a joint initiative of the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA) and Aroha Philanthropies, to advance creative aging programs for older adults in Delaware. Funding will support training and program implementation led by teaching artists at libraries throughout the state to promote artistic expression, social interaction, and enhanced mental and physical health through meaningful engagement in the arts. Twenty-five teaching artists and library staff from 10 Delaware libraries will participate in this training later in May. Following initial training, teaching artists will have an opportunity to develop curriculum and receive coaching for workshops and classes designed for adult learners.

Andromeda #33
by Jack Knight
Andromeda #33, painted canvas, wood, and masonite, 32 x 32 x 4 inches
Combines: The Andromeda Series, an exhibition of wall sculptures by Jack Knight, will be on view in the Mezzanine Gallery from May 7–28, 2021. Knight is the recipient of a 2021 Artist Fellowship in Sculpture from the Delaware Division of the Arts.
Knight calls these works “combines” because he combines canvas, wood, and masonite into sculptural painted constructions that hang on the wall. The exhibition features thirteen combines, each measuring approximately 3 feet by 3 feet. The Andromeda Series was inspired by the 1971 science fiction thriller film, The Andromeda Strain, and the Andromeda galaxy.
These colorful three-dimensional works are created based on triangular forms that Knight builds at the beginning of the work. He then adds hand-painted round canvases and wood shapes to the form. Afterwards, he adds small embellishments to the composition for visual interest and balance. Learn more with the Meet the Artist video.
The Mezzanine Gallery, open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is located on the second floor of the Carvel State Office Building, 820 N. French Street, Wilmington. Visitors must wear face coverings and maintain 6 feet distance from other individuals not in their household.

Delaware Represented in "America the Beautiful" National Art Show
The state of Delaware will be represented in an upcoming, major national art show by Delaware artist Jacalyn Beam. The show, titled "America the Beautiful," opens on Memorial Day, May 31, 2021 and features our unique country documented on canvas through the eyes of living artists in each state.
Select, invited artists are documenting America extending from the Atlantic in the east to the Pacific in the west - akin to what schoolteacher Katherine Lee Bates labeled in her poem "from sea to shining sea" in 1893. Bates' words, now sung as "America the Beautiful," come alive visually for all to see and experience in this 2021 epic virtual art show featuring artists from each of the fifty states. Twenty percent of all proceeds go directly to Feeding America.
"On a Clear Day" (Winterthur), oil on conservation linen baltic birch panel, 14 x 18 inches
The "America the Beautiful" art show is the brainchild of Mary Williams, who owns a fine art gallery in Boulder, Colorado. Ms. Williams and her staff are dedicated to supporting local and national art awareness. On May 31, art will reach a vast audience in each state, including Delaware! Ten paintings executed in and featuring Delaware scenery will be on the national stage.
Beam, widely recognized as a plein air painter, views painting outdoors as an "optional way to see three dimensional objects, the subtleties of light and shadow, atmospheric perspective, and real colors." Beam is included in "100 Mid Atlantic Painters," published by Shiffer, and "Brandywine Reflections," by Gene Pisasale, as an artist helping to preserve the Brandywine traditions. She's been featured in HUNT Magazine 2019 and multiple digital platforms including Outdoor Painter, the home of Plein Air Magazine.
