THE COUNCIL CONNECT

September 2026

Growing season is now transitioning into harvest season, and for a few years now, I’ve been growing a dazzling, multi-colored variety I affectionately nicknamed “disco tomatoes.” Eating sun-warmed grape tomatoes always brings comforting memories of eating my way through my parents’ garden when I was just old enough to “help” them with the weeding.

Memory is also such an important part of my work as State Folklorist, especially at this time of year, when Heritage Award nominations are coming in. Each one reminds of how our state's cultural communities remember and honor their tradition bearers. As the weather cools, they tend to be on my mind in some way, whether I'm in the garden, plucking tomatoes, or at my desk, building spreadsheets.

As autumn embraces us, I wish you moments of cheery memory, vivid flavor, and cultural abundance.
