Who is Your Neighbor? - Blue Hannon, Executive Director

Wheels For Workers had the pleasure of participating in the Sacred Heart Day of SHAring on April 9th. Students participated in activities that provided them information about the struggles refugee families go through when they come into this Country(see article below). This month we also made a commitment to partner with Colored Girls Bike Too to provide bike repairs during the Jefferson Avenue Friday Night Live Events and some other activities on Buffalo’s Eastside. In March we delivered our first bikes internationally to Colombia, Cuba, The Philippines and Ukraine thanks to a partnership with Niagara Warehouse of Hope. We also continue to provide bicycles as transportation to our Refugee neighbors and are donating bikes to people in the Burmese Community of Buffalo.

During this time of transition for our organization due to the current political climate, we were forced to ask the age old question “Who is Your Neighbor”. I think we are a stronger, more resilient organization as a result. Yes, we want to continue to help Refugees who come to Buffalo looking for a better life, but we also have explored and found new ways to make a difference with other neighbors.

With your help, we will continue to do the good work of providing bicycles to those who need primary transportation and their families.

I am so proud of our all-volunteer organization! With so much going on in the world, it may difficult to know how to help. I know that I can get up everyday and fix a bike and help one of my neighbors. I encourage you to join us and volunteer for a great cause!

Sacred Heart Academy day of SHAring!

On Wednesday April 9th, Wheels for Workers 716 participated in the Sacred Heart Academy's 20th Day of SHAring. The day focused on their Learn & Serve efforts studying the issues surrounding refugees.

Wheels for Workers 716 had 8 stations around the Sacred Heart gym where we taught students how to fix a tire. It was a great hands-on experience for all involved. Students and Faculty also donated bikes to be distributed back into the community. We are pleased to be part of these community activities that teach young people the importance of giving back, understanding who their neighbors are and the struggles they might be facing, and hopefully becoming bicycling enthusiasts and advocates.

OPEN FOR BUSINESS - Please stop by the Wheelhouse during our open hours. We are in the back of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Eggertsville. 4007 Main Street Buffalo, N.Y. 14226

University at Buffalo Bike Repair!

Thanks to everyone who participated in bike repairs at UB North, South and Medical campus. The weather was not very cooperative but our volunteers persevered and made a lot of our neighbors at the University at Buffalo happy and safe on the roads!

Please share this newsletter with others so they can see the work we are doing in the community. Our goal is to get as many donated bikes fixed up and out into the community to those who need them.

Karen Society of Buffalo Bike Event

On April 23rd we had the honor of helping the Karen Society of Buffalo receive over 70 bikes and helmets- thanks to the hard work and generosity of our W4W volunteers, GObike, and the Police Athletic League, who also donated helmets.

GOBike led a fun safety demo, and the kids were thrilled to ride off on their new wheels!

Huge thanks to Niagara River Greenway Commission for coordinating this incredible event!
