The Cary Academy Middle School Science Olympiad team is a fearless squad of young scientists who aren't afraid to experiment (with knowledge, not chemicals... usually). In just four years, they have transformed from newcomers to a formidable force, earning a 9th place finish at regionals in their second year and climbing to 8th place in their third. This year they places 6th at the Wolfpack Regional and will be headed to the State Tournament on April 25th and 26th.
The team is primarily composed of girls who recognize the excitement and power of science. At the heart of their team spirit is Phat Gus, a stuffed squirrel mascot who serves as a reminder to always be curious, a little nuts, and prepared to crack tough problems.
For the Chargers, Science Olympiad represents dedication, discovery, and the occasional super glue disaster. They have invested countless hours, including Saturdays, into solving problems, building contraptions, and learning new skills (like how to use a power saw safely). Their tournament preparation experiences have been both educational and entertaining.
Their advice to rookie teams? Embrace the chaos, expect the unexpected, and don’t be afraid to mess up big time—because that’s where the real learning happens.
Their motto is simple: take chances, make mistakes, and get messy—an ode to the wisdom of Ms. Frizzle. Science Olympiad is not about achieving perfection; it is about growth, improvement, and occasionally navigating the aftermath of an unfortunate super glue incident.
With their strong scientific passion and their loyal, plump squirrel mascot, the Cary Academy Middle School Science Olympiad team is ready to take on whatever challenges come their way.
From the Coach perspective:
"Science Olympiad is where we challenge ourselves, cheer each other on, and prove that with enough teamwork, problem-solving, and possibly a little duct tape, anything is possible!"
