NASA Harvest Releases June 2024 Winter Crop Planted Area and Wheat Production Estimate

As the growing season progresses in Ukraine, NASA Harvest scientists mapped winter cereals and rapeseed across the country. Monitoring agricultural production during wartime is crucial to ensure food security and prevent global shortages, which can lead to widespread hunger and additional social unrest.

NASA Harvest Hosts Training on EO Tools for Agriculture Monitoring in Zambia

NASA Harvest teamed up with the Group on Earth Observations Global Agricultural Monitoring (GEOGLAM), the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC), and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) to hold a comprehensive four-day training session aimed at enhancing the agricultural monitoring capabilities of several African national agricultural ministries.

People of Harvest Interview Series: Alana Ginsburg

Meet NASA Harvest's Alana Ginsburg! Alana is a research assistant with the NASA Harvest Africa Initiative who graduated from the University of Maryland this past spring. Her work with Harvest involves analyzing satellite data to improve insight into agricultural conditions across Africa. She has also worked with meteorologists at the National Weather Service as a NOAA Hollings Scholar and conducted research on microplastic contamination in local waterways.

NASA Harvest Expanding Work in Latin America

NASA Harvest is working with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) to evaluate and enable the use of remote sensing to develop agricultural statistics in Latin America. The specialists have observed a frequent use of remote sensing information, despite significant heterogeneity in usage related to access and training.

Harvesting Data from Space to Inform Policy and Investments in Ukraine’s Grain Sector

NASA Harvest researchers met with Ukrainian officials at a UN FAO and European Bank of Reconstruction and Development meeting in Rome to discuss how remote sensing can help the monitoring of land use throughout the country and provide market transparency as the country remains a major agricultural exporter.

NASA is Helping Farmers — How Researchers are Using Satellite Images to Address Big Ag Issues

NASA Harvest's US-focused sister consortium, NASA Acres, was featured in a recent NPR article highlighting the work they've achieved since their launch one year ago. NASA Acres aims to improve decisions on land use planning, resource management, and agricultural yield modeling across the US agricultural sector.

Job Opportunities

A post-doc opportunity through the Mendenhall Research Fellowship Program is open now for candidates interested in a role focusing on agricultural conservation practices. The position will use spaceborne imaging data to map agricultural conservation performance in collaboration with state agencies.

More specifically, the successful candidate will:

  • Develop and implement multispectral and hyperspectral satellite remote sensing methods for winter cover crop performance (biomass, fractional cover, traits) and crop residue cover;
  • Inform decision support tools, modeling, and adaptive management;
  • Evaluate conservation implementation in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Missouri; and
  • Support projects related to NASA EMIT and NASA ACRES research.

Learn more about the role and requirements here. Applications will be accepted through July 17, 2024.

NASA ARSET - Drought Monitoring, Prediction, and Projection using NASA Earth System Data

Three Online Trainings Between July 23 - August 1, 2024

NASA's ARSET (Applied Remote Sensing Training Program) is hosting a three day training on the use of Earth observation data to monitor different types of drought (meteorological, hydrological, and agricultural). The training will also cover drought prediction analysis on sub-seasonal to seasonal time scales and climate change projection analysis of drought conditions

The training is free and open to the public, and a recording will be available afterwards.

AGU24 Annual Meeting

December 9 - 13, 2024

NASA Harvest and NASA Acres invite abstracts for our joint session at the AGU24 meeting “Satellite Solutions: Advancing Agricultural Monitoring Through Remote Sensing” focused on EO data applications in support of food security. We seek contributions showcasing satellite remote sensing's role in addressing today’s most pressing agricultural challenges at both local and global scales. Topics include disaster management, early warning systems, innovative insurance schemes, and regenerative practices. Emphasis will be placed on practical applications and real-world impact.

Abstracts are due July 31, 2024. Please visit the official AGU website for more information on the abstract submission process.
