A Message from Steve Yoon, Investment Officer at Municipal Employees' Annuity and Benefit Fund of Chicago and TIDE Board:

In the wake of recent events surrounding the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community, my heart goes out to those who have lost their lives, their families and have experienced any form of discrimination.

Hate has no place in our society. In the last year and a half, we have seen a massive divide and hate towards one another in this country layered with a global pandemic. It serves as a dense fog that clouds our hope.

When we need to depend on one another the most, we are pushing each other away… this is not the right time for that. Our country is built by immigrants on the promise of diversity. Every one of us has our own story, a journey that brought us to this country, to contribute to the promise of the “American Dream”. Asians are just as much a part of American history as many other races who like me sought success in this country.

Our country is stronger than this and our people are more loving than this… do not let the few wreak havoc and cloud our judgment.

It is time for unification. I stand by my African American, Hispanic, and Asian American brothers and sisters who have been wronged. It is our responsibility to create change. It is time for us to come together and stand with one another to fight for a brighter future.

Non-Profit Feature of the Month: WHEELS. While COVID-19 has been challenging for all of us, the young people in the Washington Heights neighborhood in New York City have encountered a unique set of struggles: this neighborhood was hit especially hard by the pandemic with one of the highest number of deaths in the city. The grim facts are not a surprise as this community is predominantly working class and poor. As a lower income, majority Latinx neighborhood, the people in Washington Heights have suffered disproportionately from the health and economic downturn from the pandemic and will not benefit fully from any ensuing economic recovery in the near term. In turn, the socio-economic toll on its young people is enormous and will have a devastating impact on their future for years.

Now, more than ever before, these young people need WHEELS (Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning Schools), which opened its door in September 2006 to serve this high-need community. Ninety percent of WHEELS students are first generation college students from low-income, minority populations. Friends of WHEELS was founded in 2012 to make college a reality for these students: through our focused programming, we ensure that every student in WHEELS has the resources and support to get into college, to succeed while there and beyond. Our mission is critical to creating a more just world.
