What is your personal/professional story?

I have been reflecting on this recently because there are times when people ask how I’ve arrived here, looking for clarity to inform their own next steps. I am often cautious to answer because each of us is on our own unique journey, and there is no roadmap for what your life is supposed to look like, it is yet to be determined. And yet, there is plenty of messaging out there about the “right” steps to take, messages about what success is supposed to look like and how to arrive there.

Every moment that has led up to this moment has had an impact. The joys, the hurts, the big moments, and, most importantly, the small moments are all part of a beautiful woven tapestry that has allowed me to be present and grateful for where I am now.

My short story is this: I am the first-born child of an interracial couple, who had both experienced loss and pain in their own childhoods. As the eldest, I learned to navigate the world on my own and to be a caretaker of others. I carried this weight on my shoulders as I navigated being a daughter, a sister, a student, and a teacher. And then one day I met that pain, and I developed some compassion and love towards it, and in doing so began to heal that wound.

I decided that I wanted to become a leader who could hold space for others to meet their own hurts. I cultivated my coaching and facilitating practices as the medicine I could administer. That is what has led me to who I am and what I do today.

What key moments in your life led you to where you are today?

I believe the power of the mundane is magic. There is one moment that jumps out to me. In a chance crossing of paths, I bumped into someone, who at that time was an acquaintance, and in a short exchange of “How are you doing?” shared that she was in the depths of hiring a new teammate, and then we parted ways. It was a moment of less than 60 seconds, and it sent me on a trajectory I could never have imagined.

I had no experience in this specific role, but I had a passion for the work and a commitment to learning. I took a risk and applied. And she they took a leap of faith and invited me in. This person was Sarah Brenkert. She believed in me and she taught me what I didn’t know.

She challenged me to grow and let me find my way. What might have happened had we not bumped into one another in that hallway, pausing for one moment to connect, as we both rushed to the next thing? I think of how many moments of rushing, that place of moving too quickly, keep us from exploring that unfolding moment, the what might be. It reminds me of the worth of a second and how we can embrace each one as an invitation of possibility.

Where does your passion to serve come from?

It comes from a deep belief in the power of love. When we choose to do what we do from a place of love and acceptance we can liberate ourselves from the limitations of judgment and needing to be right. I choose to show up this way not because I expect others to do it, but because it is how I want to show up in the world.

How can GlobalMindED help you reach your goals?

My goals are informed by my desire to contribute to a world where all people can contribute their gifts. GlobalMindED can be part of that by continuing to elevate and celebrate the gifts of everyone they work with, and cultivating a narrative of the power of our gifts and the importance of sharing them with others.
