Presidents Perch

by Cheryl Hart

Friends President

This has been a very busy rolling-into-summer time for Friends. On May 22, we celebrated the

life of our former volunteer store manager, Sharon Miller. There was a big turnout with lots of

remembrances and stories told. Sharon’s sister and nephew were able to join us too which

made the event even more special and meaningful. I still expect to see her face when I walk into

the Visitor Center.

We are commissioning a bench to replace the bench in front of the viewing window in the store.

Virginia Parks, our Store Committee Secretary and an artist, is coming up with a design and

Friends Board Member Phyllis Millan has found a craftsman who will turn Virginia’s ideas into a

lasting memorial to Sharon. It is appropriate that the bench, when completed, will take its place

in the store where she donated so much of her time. If you would like to contribute to this

project in Sharon’s memory, please go to

https://www.friendsoftualatinrefuge.org/sys/website/?pageId=1863716

and select the third

option to dedicate your donation to Sharon’s memorial. Thank you!

A few days later, we were honored by a visit by Oregon’s 6th

Congressional District

Congresswoman Andrea Salinas and two of her aides: Erin Chen, Field Aide for Washington

County and Wilsonville and Alexander O’Keefe, Federal Grants Aide. Representing FWS and the

refuge were Eva Kristofik, Deputy Refuge Manager and Natalie Balkam, Visitor Services Ranger.

They were joined by Friends representatives Alan Christensen, Friends Advocacy Chair, Rod

Roberson, one of the refuge’s volunteer naturalists and me, Cheryl Hart, Friends President.

We took the Congresswoman and her Aides on the Seasonal Trail which gave us a great

opportunity to explain the work that has been done, and Friends role in acquiring funding and

volunteers to help to restore that habitat from the dairy farm that it once was. The

Congresswoman lives nearby so comes to the refuge often, but this is the first time she has had

an “official” tour with this knowledgeable group.

Most of the wildlife performed flawlessly during our walk with a Bald Eagle soaring overhead,

Red-Winged Black Birds flitting through the tall grass, of course, a Great Blue Heron perched on

the in-stream logs searching for dinner and numerous Mama ducks and geese and their off-

spring enjoying an afternoon paddle. The turtles were no-shows and have been appropriately

reprimanded for their failure to perform. Apparently, they were just a little slow in arriving.

Unfortunately, the Congresswoman didn’t have enough time to visit Wapato Lake NWR at this

time so, at the conclusion of our walk, we gathered in the Headquarters Conference Room

where Eva, Natalie, and Alan were able to provide some information about that refuge and the

work we are doing there. We will have an opportunity to take Erin and Alexander to Wapato

Lake NWR later this summer.

The Congresswoman is passionate about her love of the refuge and her support of Public Lands

and the Federal Employees who work here. She and her aides have been attentive and

responsive to our needs when we reach out to them with concerns.

It is officially summer. We’ve had our first heatwave and schools are letting out. Be sure to put

Brews for the Birds on your calendar Friday afternoon and evening August 1 and all-day

Saturday, August 2 at Langer’s Family Entertainment here in Sherwood. Great family fun with

music, beverages and exhibitors. Food will be available from Langer's. We hope to see all of you

there!

Focus on Friends

Executive Director

Welcoming New Neighbors: Friends of the Refuge Partners with Habitat for Humanity

Being a community asset is a core value of the Friends of the Refuge. In March, when Matina Kauffman, Vice President of Homeownership and Neighborhood Programs for Habitat for Humanity, reached out, we saw an immediate opportunity to embody this principle.

I've since been working closely with Annette Pronk and Tiffany Coleman from Habitat to organize a special neighborhood walk event for the 16 future homeowners of King City Commons. On a recent Saturday, the Friends of the Refuge proudly hosted 36 new residents for a day dedicated to community building through a walk on the refuge, followed by lunch.

My primary goal for the morning was to warmly welcome these families to the refuge, located just a short distance from their new homes. I wanted them to understand that these public lands are an extension of their own backyards. It was important to ensure they felt welcome and comfortable navigating the trails and participating in our public programs.

We were fortunate to have a beautiful day, and everyone enjoyed the experience. After the walk and lunch at the refuge, the families had their first opportunity to step inside their new homes. The planned move-in is set for August of this year. Please join us in extending a warm welcome to the refuge community.

Save the Date- Our Annual Brews for the Birds will take place on Aug 1 and 2 at Langer’s Family Entertainment in Sherwood, Oregon. The Lloyd Jones Struggle and JaSkaMon will be returning and I have added a few new bands this year. If you are a vendor and would be interested in hosting one of our free booths- please see the flyer in the newsletter. If you are interested in volunteering for the festival – please email Info@FriendsofTualatinRefuge.org- subject line Brews Volunteer and we will get back to you. We are also participating in the July 19th Robinhood Festival Parade- see information in the newsletter- we would love to have you join us- just grab your favorite Friends or Brews for the Birds swag (T-Shirt/ hat) and meet us at Langer’s by 9:30 AM.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at our largest fundraiser of the year!

See you on the Refuge!

Welcome Bethany! Friends of the Refuge New Habitat Restoration Specialist

Bethany Llewellyn (she/her)

Habitat Restoration Specialist

I'm thrilled to be joining the Friends of the Tualatin River NWR as the Habitat Restoration Specialist! I grew up in Corvallis, learning birds and plants on nature walks at Finley NWR, but I've been out of state for nearly 10 years, so coming back to work in the Willamette Valley feels like a homecoming. I'm particularly excited about helping to implement restoration projects across the refuge and getting to know our amazing volunteer network! Many of you are so knowledgeable about this place and I look forward to learning from you.

Prior to coming to the Refuge, I have been in rural Northern California for three years managing the Forest Health program at a Conservation District. I've also worked with Northwest Youth Corps and the Institute for Applied Ecology and hold my BS in Biology and Environmental Policy from the University of Puget Sound. I love learning about plants and animals of all kinds and am particularly passionate about community-based conservation work. In my free time, I'm excited to be backpacking in the Oregon Cascades, trail running around the Portland Metro area, and playing Ultimate Frisbee with a Portland-based club team.

Thank you for the warm welcome to the Friends of TRNWR community, and I look forward to meeting you at the Refuge!
