Message from Mayor Kapszukiewicz
June is a significant month of the year for many across the nation as it marks two important observances – LGBTQ+ Pride Month and Immigrant Heritage Month.

As mayor, one of my honors is to issue proclamations. For the past three years, it has been a privilege to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals, and immigrants have had on the world and Toledo. Below you will see pictures of our city proclamations in recognition of Pride Month and Immigrant Heritage Month.

Last year, the City of Toledo dedicated a portion of Adams Street as Pride Way. That was a just a small way of showing our city’s support for the LGBTQ+ community. The Pride Flag is also being displayed in my office this month, which is appropriate as we begin to reopen for face-to-face meetings now that many of us are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The City of Toledo is committed to the purpose of equal rights for all people and recognizes that LGBTQ+ rights are human rights, and emphasizes the importance that we stay committed year-round in supporting and celebrating all members of our community.

Additionally, our city supports and celebrates the past, present, and future generations of immigrants from every corner of the globe who have helped to create the unique character of our nation. Immigrants have been tireless leaders not only in securing their own rights and access to equal opportunity, but have also campaigned to create a more just society for all Americans.
National Gun Violence Awareness Day
Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day and the start of Wear Orange weekend.

Every day, more than 100 Americans are killed by gun violence, alongside more than 230 who are shot and wounded. Gun violence prevention is more important than ever as the pandemic has exacerbated gun violence. In January 2013, Hadiya Pendleton in Chicago was shot and killed at age 15. People across the United States will recognize National Gun Violence Awareness Day and wear orange in tribute to Hadiya and other victims of gun violence. I encourage everyone to join this movement to help raise awareness about gun violence and honor the lives of gun violence victims and survivors.
Roosevelt Pool Lifeguard Hero
Finally, I want to take a moment to publicly thank Milyon Campbell, a lifeguard at Roosevelt Pool.

Milyon sprung to heroic action on June 1 – the opening day for the city’s public pools this year – and saved the life of a young swimmer.

Lifeguards are so critically important to our community and we are lucky to have her among our pool staff this summer. The city cannot thank her enough for her actions earlier this week.

The event is in conjunction with Major League Baseball's PLAY BALL program, whose mission is to encourage young people and communities to engage in baseball or softball-related activities. PLAY BALL events demonstrate the positive way the game can serve as an outlet for physical activity, fun with friends, and learning how to play the sport at its most basic level.

The event is open to any baseball or softball novice aged 5 to 12 years old. Each session features five skill stations for participants to learn baseball fundamentals. All children will receive a free PLAY BALL branded bat and ball set to take home. Participants must register in advance.
