Pima Road Widening Project Update and Call to Action
The City of Scottsdale is engaged in a multiyear project to upgrade and widen Pima Road. The City is currently working on the design of the Pinnacle Peak to Happy Valley Road segment and is slated to make a decision as to the design of this segment at the July 6 council meeting. The adjacent neighborhoods had asked the City to build a sound wall between their neighborhoods and Pima Road in conjunction with the project to lessen the impact of the increased traffic noise affecting the neighborhoods. The City had originally agreed to build this sound wall but has recently changed its mind. The three HOA communities that are directly affected are Alta Sonora, Pinnacle Peak Estates III and Pinnacle Paradise. The three HOA boards have been working diligently on doing whatever they can to see to it that the City builds the wall it promised them.
The City has thus far refused to build the sound wall in this segment of the project, and the affected neighborhoods are planning to protest this decision at the July 6 meeting.
The City’s decision not to build a sound wall in conjunction with this segment of the project could set a precedent when the segments affecting Sincuidados are designed in the next 12-24 months. The City is planning to do the design of the Las Piedras south (our Pima entrance) segment in the next 12 months, and the design for the Las Piedras north project will follow. Sincuidados has formed a “Pima Road Widening Committee” to help us prepare to engage with the City during the next 12 months as it begins planning the first phase that affects us. The committee believes that it is in our best interest to help support the communities to the south who are currently wrestling with the City over the sound wall.
If you are interested in getting involved to help these neighborhoods (and ultimately our neighborhood), you are encouraged to attend the Scottsdale City Council meeting on July 6 to support these neighborhoods in their efforts to convince the City to build a sound wall. You can fill out a card to speak at the meeting during public comment, or fill out a card opposing the approval of the design contract unless a sound wall is included. The meeting is on July 6, 5pm at Scottsdale City Hall, 3939 N. Drinkwater. The best way to get there is The Loop 101 south at the Indian School exit. Head west to 75th St. and make a left at City Hall on the right. There is a large outdoor, free parking lot. The entrance to the building is on the south side.
If you cannot attend, we encourage you to write or phone the mayor and council members and express your desire for the City to provide sound walls in all areas of the Pima Road widening project where the adjacent residents request a sound wall to be built.
