Hi Deborah,
Many families provide more caregiving than anyone ever planned for. Whether it's to tend to their own medical needs or personal needs, sometimes caregivers just need a break!
I attended a great conference today hosted by the Providence VA Caregiver Support program and learned that most Veterans are eligible for at least some respite services each year. If you, or someone you know, would like to learn more about how to apply and the types of respite-home care, adult day health or nursing home that may be best for your family reach out to the local team at
401-273-7100 x14308 or if you'd like to learn more before calling you can check out more information here.
Also in attendance at the conference were my colleagues from the Catholic Diocese of Providence's Care Breaks program. The Care Breaks program also offers funding for a variety of respite services as well as a unique program that matches nursing students from the local universities and colleges with families that need respite. The students can NOT provide personal care but ARE able to provide engaging support to enable the caregiver to step away and take a break. (Note that the Care Breaks program is for caregivers who care for an adult of any age. It's not limited to caregivers of older adults.)
Both programs offer valuable respite services designed to give caregivers the necessary breaks to recharge and rejuvenate. These programs provide temporary relief, ensuring individuals continue to receive quality care while caregivers take the time needed to care for ourself.
