The State Bar of Nevada’s Intellectual Property (IP) Law Section is excited to announce a new pro bono clinic that will bring Copyright Claims Board (CCB) assistance to Nevada. Working with experienced Nevada intellectual property attorneys and students from UNLV’s William S. Boyd School of Law, the IP Section will expand access to legal assistance for creators, small businesses, and others navigating copyright disputes.
The CCB, a tribunal within the U.S. Copyright Office, serves as a forum for copyright disputes involving claims of up to $30,000. It offers a streamlined alternative to federal court, with online proceedings and remote hearings. The CCB hears copyright infringement claims, requests for declarations of noninfringement, claims involving Digital Millennium Copyright Act notices, etc.
Nevada’s initiative builds on a nationwide network of pro bono resources. The CCB currently lists 23 clinics representing 22 law schools and 15 pro bono organizations. Together, these clinics serve 33 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, and several offer assistance nationwide. Services range from consultations and referrals to limited-scope or full representation.
The clinic will support Nevada’s creative community while giving Boyd law students opportunities to develop practical skills in copyright law and pro bono services.
Eric Kohli, vice chair of the IP Section, will serve as director of the new clinic. To learn more, contact Kohli at Eric.Kohli@PierFerd.com or Paxton Fleming, chair of the IP Section, at PAFleming@TaftLaw.com.
