A Prayer for the Anniversary of Katrina

This week we remember and pray for all those affected by Hurricane Katrina 19 years ago. The following prayer was composed by Sarah Chancellor-Watson on August 29, 2021.

Holy and Mighty God,

you who spun the planets into motion

and who moved over the waters of chaos at creation,

we remember today how the waters of Hurricane Katrina overwhelmed our city [19] years ago.

We remember and we lift up to you not only the thousands of lives lost during the hurricane and in the days and weeks that followed,

but also the countless more lives who were displaced and scattered,

those who were injured and traumatized

and still bear the scars left by the storm.

Bind up these wounds and bring your healing touch as we grieve –

the dead, the lost, and the vestiges of our cultures and heritage that exist now only in memory and story.

Rebuilding Hope Mission Trip to Mississippi

October 10-13

Join us in the ongoing rebuilding work in the Mississippi delta where tornados devasted the area in 2023. We’ll be leaving Thursday evening from New Orleans and drive to Leland, Mississippi (approximately 5 hours), work on Friday and Saturday, then make our way back to New Orleans on Sunday afternoon. The cost is $75 per person for lodging plus the cost of meals out on our own. Email Pastor Sarah for more information.

Clothing Drive

During the month of September, the Community Ministry Committee will be collecting clothing for the Program of Hope homeless ministry. Requested are clean and wearable-condition items of men's and women's clothing and shoes (no children's clothing, please). There will be a blue bin in Frampton Fellowship Hall where items can be deposited beginning Sunday, September 1.

Would You Like to Join a Supper Club?

In response to our five-year Strategic Plan, the Congregational Life Committee is exploring the formation of Supper Clubs. These will be small group gatherings where participants can get to know each other better and share the fellowship of a simple meal. In order to better facilitate these groups, the Supper Club planning team asks that you respond to some survey questions meant to guide the formation, framework and development of Supper Club groupings of eight. Please take the survey at scapc.org/supper-clubs or on the SCAPC app by September 8.

"Theology Thursday" Returns

The Theology Thursday Study Group, led by Senior Pastor Chris Currie, will resume their meetings on Thursday, September 12, 12:15-1:30 p.m. in the second floor conference room. Our first study will be on The Sisters of Sinai: How Two Lady Adventurers Discovered the Hidden Gospels by Janet Soskice.

Named as one of the best books of the year in 2009, The Sisters of Sinai is an adventure story about two Presbyterian sisters from Scotland who made one of the most important Biblical discoveries in the Victorian era. Soskice tells this story within the context of biblical scholarship and other challenging ideas and discoveries of that era which provides a lot of material for rich discussions.

Books are available for order through local bookstores or Amazon. The first assignment for the group is the Prologue through Chapter Two (from title page to page 21). Any questions can be directed to miriam@scapc.org.

Memorial Services

Our sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Lou Frierson who died on Tuesday, August 20. A memorial service will be held tomorrow (Wednesday) at noon in the Sanctuary, with visitation at 10:30 in the Bloomfield Room.

Our sympathy is also extended to the family and friends of Roney Morton who died on Friday, August 23. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 3 at noon in the Sanctuary, with visitation at 10:30 in the Bloomfield Room.

Sign Up to Bring Sunday Snacks

The Congregational Life Committee is seeking volunteers to provide refreshments for the congregation after the 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. services on Sundays. Refreshments can be small bites, homemade or store-bought cookies, finger sandwiches, muffins, granola bars, etc. for which the church can reimburse up to $50. We ask that refreshments be delivered, plated and ready to go, to Frampton Fellowship Hall by 9:00 a.m. on Sunday.

Our New Landscaping

Now that the exteriors of our church buildings have been beautifully cleaned, the Property Committee has collaborated with a generous donor from our church membership to refresh our landscaping along St. Charles Avenue. The new plantings visually showcase our magnificent sanctuary to all in the community who pass, so be sure to enjoy as you come in or drive by!

McMillan Society to the Theatre!

The McMillan Society (for ages 55+) is hosting a theatrical outing on Sunday, September 15 beginning with lunch catered by Harvest and Hatch at 12:30 p.m. in the Land Building. At 2:30 we will attend Crescent City Stage’s performance of A Doll’s House at Loyola’s Marquette Theater. Crescent City Stage is a theatrical organization founded by SCAPC member Liz Elkins Newcomer. This award-winning play by Amy Herzog puts a captivating contemporary spin on Ibsen’s classic. Following the performance will be a program on “Women in the Theater”. The cost is $62/person. Your check, delivered to Emily Fleshman in the SCAPC office by August 31, is your reservation. Any questions, please contact Miriam Hollar at miriam@scapc.org.

Youth Pool Party

Nearly 50 youth, along with their families, flocked to the Youth Group Back-to-School Pool Party at the home of Louellen and Darryl Berger on Saturday!
