Tazzarin North to Nunatsiavut

Fast Tracking and Friends

2045 Saturday, August 12, 2023

The last few days have felt like fast tracking. We have been striving to reach Lewisporte by tomorrow evening in preparation for a crew change. What were already fairly lengthy day's runs became three very long days when the storm of a few days ago kept us hunkered down. Today we did 54 nautical miles, some under power into a head wind until a low pressure system passed overhead and brought an anticipated favorable wind shift and some good sailing. At times we were outrunning squall lines with menacing clouds, other times we were in brilliant sunshine. A bit of everything.

We were underway just after 0600 this morning. At 1700, eleven hours later we were off the sunshine-bathed point of La Scie. The charming town of La Scie's name is French for ""The Saw." The third photo in the group below is of the town's headland, in the foreground, that has a sharp ridge, resembling a saw blade. The town itself is in a small protected bay, nestled below picturesque hills.

La Scie makes a convenient stopping point for vessels trying to move quickly up or down the coast, as we are. We had stopped here a month ago on our way north. during that first stop we had made friends with Larry and Valerie, a wonderful couple who operate the Ouport Museum and Tea Room. I really wanted to visit again with the two of them and introduce them to JJ.

Larry and Valerie gave us another wonderful evening of friendship and good food. Valerie made pea soup, beans and the tastiest fish cakes I have ever eaten. That was followed by chocolate cake for me and rhubarb crumble and ice cream for JJ. The best part of it was just time spent with good and friendly people. We stepped outside their tea room and museum (bottom photo) to take a picture of the four of us all together, which is at the top of this email.

Tomorrow we are up early for the 55 Mike run to Lewisporte, much of which will be through the lovely islands of Ntre Dame Bay.
