PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

  • Core foundation: Introduces AREMA, railroad safety requirements, railroad history, operating structures, terminology, and orientation practices.
  • Primary technical focus: Covers railroad mapping, historical records, right-of-way evidence, field data collection, control systems, curves, track geometry, GIS, and design considerations.
  • Legal and property emphasis: Explains railroad title research, leases, contracts, easements, crossings, abandonment, rail banking, and Surface Transportation Board records.
  • Key takeaway: Railroad surveying requires specialized safety knowledge and a broad review of railroad, federal, and historical records—not just local courthouse documents.
