SURGICAL EDUCATION & INNOVATION Peripheral Nerve Surgery: What's Next for Foot & Ankle? From nerve protection to regeneration, a closer look at techniques and technologies worth knowing. |
Peripheral nerve surgery is evolving, with growing interest in how repair and reconstruction strategies may address familiar challenges in the foot and ankle: tarsal tunnel syndrome, Morton's neuroma, and painful nerve endings. Following conversations at the Chicago Lower Extremity Surgical Symposium (CLESS), we're continuing the discussion with clinical education, manufacturer resources, and an opportunity to explore these technologies firsthand. |
FEATURED WEBINAR • FOLLOWING CLESS OrthoCell Remplir™ WebinarA closer look at Remplir™: From science to surgical decision-making Thursday, November 5, 2026 7:00 PM Eastern Continue the conversation following CLESS with an educational discussion of Remplir, from the science behind the technology to surgical decision-making. Hosted by Amber Muehlmann Senior Manager, Medical & Clinical Affairs Orthocell No registration required. Join via Zoom on November 5 at 7:00 PM ET. Meeting ID: 845 4176 6126 Passcode: Remplir115 |
CLINICAL PERSPECTIVES Beyond Decompression & ExcisionTarsal Tunnel: Protecting the Nerve After ReleaseDecompression addresses nerve entrapment. Scarring, tethering, and recurrent symptoms may remain concerns, particularly in revision cases. Adjunctive wrapping is an area of interest; patient selection and the evidence for each technique remain central to decision-making. Watch: Tarsal Tunnel Repair—Onlay Technique → Morton's Neuroma: Is Excision the End of the Story?Neurectomy is an established option when appropriate nonsurgical treatment has failed, but permanent numbness, persistent pain, and stump neuroma can complicate outcomes. In recurrent or complex cases, nerve-end management and selected reconstructive approaches merit careful evaluation. Watch: Morton's Neuroma Nerve Repair → OrthoCell practitioner surgical video RPNI: Rethinking Painful Nerve EndingsA regenerative peripheral nerve interface (RPNI) places a transected nerve end into a free muscle graft, providing a target for regenerating axons. Much of the clinical experience concerns neuroma and postamputation pain. Broader applications require procedure-specific evidence and appropriate expertise. RPNI uses autologous muscle tissue. Remplir may be considered as an adjunct for nerve protection, with the aim of reducing adhesions around the nerve, when clinically appropriate and consistent with its instructions for use. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHTS Nerve Protection in PracticeExplore Remplir, a collagen wrap designed to support peripheral nerve repair and protection. |
OrthoCell | Remplir™Peripheral nerve repair and protection Remplir is a sterile, resorbable collagen membrane used in the management of peripheral nerve injuries where there has been no substantial loss of nerve tissue. The membrane is placed around the nerve or repair site to provide a protective interface with surrounding tissue. ALSO WORTH KNOWING • SELECTED NERVE RECONSTRUCTION CASES NeuroSpan Bridge™ | Auxilium BiotechnologiesFor surgeons who encounter peripheral nerve gaps, NeuroSpan Bridge is an off-the-shelf, bioresorbable PCL implant with longitudinal microchannels designed to mimic native fascicular architecture and guide axonal growth. It is indicated for peripheral nerve discontinuities where a tensionless repair can be made. Available in 10–30 mm lengths and 1.5–3.0 mm diameters, it requires no nerve harvest or thawing.
