Last week's Indian Gaming Tradeshow & Convention in San Diego carried a different energy than in recent years, bringing fewer announcements and more hard questions. The conversation across sessions and in the hallways kept returning to a few consistent themes. And while Tribes still operate on the cutting edge of innovative products and software, there was a clear focus on execution, measurable results, and long-term decision-making. We’ve summarized some of these themes below:
-
AI is moving from concept to measurable operating tool
The opportunity has shifted from “adopt AI” to “deploy it in targeted areas where outcomes can be measured and scaled.” What we see working (and how TIG can help) is a test-and-learn model: identify a small number of high-impact use cases, validate performance through controlled pilots, and expand only where results are proven. Then iterate.
-
Hurdles for technology investment are increasing
Technology seems to exist for everything: slot floor productivity, loyalty program effectiveness, cashless adoption, mobile engagement, direct-to-guest communication. Whereas we’ve seen a lot of trial over the last decade, we are increasingly seeing operators asking directly, “how much does this add to my bottom line?” Vendors are being held to a higher standard.
-
Prediction markets are a strategic and regulatory priority
Prediction markets are no longer being framed as a niche concern. They are a direct challenge to Tribal gaming revenue, regulatory frameworks, and Tribal sovereignty. PMs create competitive and policy implications – PM operators are even encroaching on sports team sponsorships – and Tribal operators are not treating this passively.
-
Tribal operators are emphasizing near-term efficiency to sustain growth
Labor costs, tariffs, power expenses, and broader inflationary pressures continue to impact revenues and margins. In response, operators (and bankers) are becoming more selective about where and how they invest, and more demanding of return profiles. We see effective capital deployment in core areas like hotel rooms, gaming floor expansions, dining, and entertainment. Increasingly, partnerships with third parties are proving fruitful, blending established consumer brands with third party capital that drives ROI.
We see operators focused on protecting core revenue streams, selectively adopting tools to hone performance, and forcing a clear, strategic rationale before expanding into new areas. These conversations are led primarily by broader priorities around sovereignty, sustainability, and long-term economic resilience. We view the next phase of growth in Tribal country as not simply expansion alone, but as a “disciplined modernization,” the success of which will be defined by how effectively operators can engage new audiences, allocate capital, and execute a consistent program of test, measure, and iterate.
