Enhancing Partners’ Financial Reporting and Accountability | |
On December 10, CARTA held a virtual training session for key personnel: finance, procurement, and grants officers, etc., of its African partner institutions. The training sought to enhance the participants' accounting and financial reporting skills to meet donor expectations and strengthen institutional accountability. The session covered essential topics such as project cost tracking, revenue recognition, Good Financial Grant Practices (GFGP), and risk management in project finance. The participants engaged in discussions and aligned their understanding of financial reporting standards, developed and planned for risk mitigation, and identified opportunities to improve processes across institutions. This training is part of CARTA’s ongoing commitment to strengthening financial accountability and ensuring compliance with funder expectations. Watch the recording here.

Showcasing at the 60th Anniversary of Kenya’s Diplomatic Journey | |
CARTA co-exhibited its work alongside the Science for Africa (SFA) Foundation and Wellcome during the 60th anniversary of Kenya’s diplomatic journey. With the theme, ‘Kenya’s Diplomatic Journey in Contributing to a Secure, Sustainable, and Prosperous Future’ the event was held at the Kenya International Conference Center (KICC) on December 2 - 4, 2024. A series of organizations, partners, and institutions creating impact and highlighting diplomatic excellence showcased their work.

CARTA at the DELTAS Africa II M&E and CPE Workshop | CARTA participated in an M&E workshop that was organized by the Science for Africa (SFA) Foundation for its grantees' M&E and Community and Public Engagement (CPE) focal points on November 27 - 28 in Nairobi. The program was represented by Marta Vicente Crespo (Program Manager), Cavens Kithinji (Program Coordinator), and Naomi Njenga (M&E Officer). The workshop focused on reviewing and providing feedback on the monitoring, evaluation, and learning tools and approaches for DELTAS Africa II and the program. | |
Re-opened: Postdoctoral Fellowships for the CARTA Discourse Research Hub | |
CARTA has re-opened the call for applications for postdoctoral fellowships for the DISCOURSE CARTA Research Hub. Up to three fellowship positions (2025-2026) are available. The CARTA research hubs serve as centers for conducting multidisciplinary, policy-relevant research, aligned with regional development agendas. Details

Makerere School of Public Health Marks 70 Years | |
This year, Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) is celebrating 70 years of transformative impact on public health in Uganda and beyond, an eventful milestone that was marked on December 13. Over the decades, MakSPH has been a leader in research, community engagement, and health innovation, contributing significantly to Makerere’s global recognition. In a landmark development, MakSPH has been granted autonomy to become a stand-alone School of Public Health, operating at the level of a College effective January 2024. This transition empowers the School to amplify its contributions to research, sustainable health solutions, and public health education. As a critical link in the CARTA-Makerere partnership, MakSPH continues to foster global collaborations and strengthen its role in addressing critical health challenges. University of Rwanda and Makerere Shine at the Prestigious Google PhD Fellowship Awards | |
Makerere University and the University of Rwanda continue to reaffirm their status as leading institutions in Africa, demonstrating academic excellence and advancing innovative research. Their global recognition through the prestigious Google PhD Fellowship Awards highlights their contributions to critical areas of study. Makerere University’s focus on natural language processing advances artificial intelligence and its application to African languages, while the University of Rwanda’s work in security, privacy, and abuse prevention addresses key challenges in the digital era, promoting safer and more inclusive technology. These achievements underscore the growing impact of African universities in global research and innovation, with Makerere University and the University of Rwanda at the forefront of shaping solutions for the continent’s and world’s most pressing issues. We celebrate nine CARTA fellows on their PhD completions and subsequent graduations. Eight of the fellows were registered at the University of the Witwatersrand while one was registered at the University of Nairobi. They graduated on December 9 and 13, 2024, respectively. | |
Early Career Researchers in Action | |

Rose Opiyo, cohort 1, University of Nairobi, was awarded a Community Engagement (CE) grant by the Science for Africa (SFA) Foundation on December 3, 2024. The CE grants were open to trainees and faculty members of the DELTAS Africa II Initiative. She will be participating in a 4-day in-person meeting from January 19 to 24, 2025. The meeting aims to provide CPE and MEAL training, outline expectations, and grant terms and conditions, support grantees to refine their engagement projects, and pilot a mentor-mentee initiative for grantees to obtain ongoing support during project implementation.

Fellowship: Public Voices Fellowship on the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse
The Public Voices Fellowship is a global initiative to diversify public knowledge and discourse. Launched by The OpEd Project in partnership with leading mission-aligned organizations and funders, it is a collective investment in changing the demographics of voice at scale, in a world where we now face challenges and opportunities that can only be unlocked with a diversity of knowledge sets, expertises, and voices. Call for Papers: Health in Africa Collection
Nature Communications, Communications Medicine, and Scientific Reports are launching an open call for papers to support and showcase research related to all aspects of health in Africa. They aim to promote high-quality research that advances our understanding of health issues in Africa, and advocates for better healthcare on the continent in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, specifically, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Call for Abstracts: New Ways of Transcribing, Visualizing, Publishing, and Providing Access to Data on Epidemics and Contagious Diseases
The International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) Scientific Panel on ‘Epidemics and Contagious Diseases: The Legacy of the Past’, will be hosting a one-day online-only workshop on the topic of ‘New ways of transcribing, visualizing, publishing, and providing access to data on epidemics and contagious diseases” at the University of Zurich (Switzerland) on 18 June 2025. The event aims to bring together experts from various disciplines working directly or indirectly on methodological questions of transcribing, visualizing, and publishing tabular or otherwise structured or unstructured data in research with handwritten or printed historical sources as effectively as possible using innovative and modern methods.
