Local: Los Gatos balances budget but projects future shortfall
The Los Gatos Town Council unanimously approved the fiscal year 2025–26 budget on June 3, successfully balancing a projected shortfall of approximately $2 million. Their plan includes some targeted reductions in some town services and cautious hiring measures to preserve essential services. This decision stabilizes the town's finances for the year ahead, but officials caution that ongoing benefit and cost pressures may create budget gaps in future years. For more information click here.
National: Small Business Seeks Supreme Court Review of Trump-Era Tariffs
A small educational toy maker, Learning Resources, has requested an expedited review by the U.S. Supreme Court of former President Trump’s tariffs, which had been imposed under emergency powers via the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Lower courts ruled the tariffs unlawful but stayed those decisions during appeals, leaving the levies in effect. The company argues that continued enforcement burdens U.S. businesses and consumers - describing the tariffs as a de facto tax potentially costing up to $600 billion annually. The Supreme Court rarely intervenes before all lower-court options are exhausted, though the toy maker cites precedent like the early intervention in the student-loan case to justify its petition.
