Good afternoon,
Updates Regarding our Lake – At approximately 3:00pm this afternoon, we heard from the lab who is processing our water samples. The actual levels will not be available until this weekend or Monday. The lab did, however, confirm that the toxin remains present in the lake and that the levels are above the recreational standards set by the EPA. The scum around the lake has been minimal, but it is still a concern for lake users. While the scum formations on the lake have reduced since the samples were collected, we still recommend caution when using the lake and to stay out of areas where surface scums are forming. These scums can move around the lake with changing winds as well.
We’ve been performing visual lake inspections daily and the lake appears to be improving with reduced biomass of aquatic plants reaching the surface. The blue green algae biomass appears to be reducing at this time as well, and scum formations were only visible in one area the winds were blowing into the shoreline. Based on the results, and the visual inspections, additional testing will be done when we see further visual improvements. We will continue to run our aquatic plant harvester to cut rooted plants, and skim floating cuttings of plants from the lake.
As mentioned above, the exact toxin levels will be shared as soon as they are received.
For more information on blue green algae, please visit the Illinois EPA Bluegreen algae website at: https://epa.illinois.gov/topics/water-quality/monitoring/algal-bloom.html
As always, the lake is, use at your own risk and when in doubt, stay out.
Finance Committee meetings – Our Finance Committee will be holding their 2nd of two meetings to present, explain and answer questions regarding the proposed 2027 annual budget tomorrow, August 22nd at 8:30am at the office. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend to see how the process works and to participate in the discussion. We’re fortunate to have the Finance Committee and our Treasurer Mark Metzler to help us navigate the task of assembling a budget that will adequately fund the many needs we have as we head into 2027. If you’re interested in knowing how your dues dollars will be used next year, please attend and participate in these meetings.
Mowing Inspection – The next mowing inspection will be held Tuesday, September 1st. All lots must be mowed on or prior to August 31st to avoid a $150 fine.
Help Wanted – Lake Summerset and the Otter Creek Lake Utility District are both looking to fill a few positions. These are full-time, year-round positions which offer competitive compensation packages and benefits. Please reply to this email if you’re interested in learning more about the positions we’re looking to fill.
Hoping all have a happy and safe weekend!
Mike
