The "Launch-It" all-ages trebuchet competition for homemade medieval siege engines is taking place, albeit 2 weeks later, on Saturday morning, 10/17, at Gayle Middle School Athletic Field in Stafford. Get more details at librarypoint.org/launch-it.

It took 144 years for American women to achieve the right to vote through the 19th Amendment, and it was a tough battle to make it happen. Come to a screening of Iron Jawed Angels at Fredericksburg Branch on Saturday afternoon, 10/17, to see a dramatization of the lives of suffragettes Alice Paul and Lucy Burns. The movie stars Hilary Swank and Frances O'Connor, with Anjelica Huston.

Enjoy destinations with a focus on history? On Wednesday night, 10/21, Bill Clevlen, author of Presidential Road Trips, will take you to places that were important in the lives of U.S. presidents.

In keeping with the VA250 commemoration, the Stafford Piecemakers' annual quilt show at Porter Branch is themed "Patriotic Patchwork." Stop by 10/23-24 and 10/26, from 10:00-5:00, to see local artists' amazing creations.

Feeling crafty yourself? IdeaSpace, the Library's MakerSpace, has sergers, along with traditional sewing machines, you can use--or learn to use--for your own projects. Book an appointment to be shown how the equipment works. You'll get direct instruction from IdeaSpace staff and earn a badge as proof of your skill.

Hands-on learning is for all ages. LEGO® Building Labs are happening at many Library locations for grades K-6. Check the schedule for fun times for young engineers.

Find a portal to all things spooky on the Library's Halloween page, from reading and viewing recommendations to fun and exciting events at Library locations. Young children can join YouTube character Blippi as he explores ways to celebrate Halloween, with treats to eat, pumpkins to carve, and dressing up in this G-rated video, available online from Kanopy Kids.

Children who enjoy Spooky Stories in person can get their shivers at Salem Church Branch on Tuesday evening, 10/27. Library staff will share tales of the season at this event, recommended for grades K-6.

In search of instant ghoulification? Teens can find their frightening favorites with horror audiobooks from hoopla Digital, a streaming service with no waiting! Adults can browse a slew of horror movies on hoopla, with lots of choices from new movies to classics, at no charge. Learn more about hoopla here.
