Greetings!
Two major animal protection bills - the bill to end live pigeon shoots in Pennsylvania (HB 1097) and the Beagle Bill (SB 381) - passed the state House Judiciary Committee on Thursday.
But our work is far from finished.
Passing the House Judiciary Committee is a critical step - but the legislative session is quickly coming to an end, and both bills must continue moving through the General Assembly in order to become law.
END LIVE PIGEON SHOOTS - HB 1097
After decades of efforts to end live pigeon shoots in Pennsylvania, HB 1097 passed the House Judiciary Committee by a 14–11 vote. At live pigeon shoots, captive birds are released to be shot for prizes and competition. These events are notorious for their cruelty. Birds who are wounded but not killed by gunfire can be left severely injured or inhumanely killed. HB 1097 would prohibit the use of live pigeons as targets in these shooting contests and finally decisively end these cruel events.
It is vitally important for us all to keep the pressure on. Please contact your state representative and urge them to support HB 1097 and help move it forward before the legislative session ends. Find your Pennsylvania legislators.
THE BEAGLE BILL - SB 381
The Beagle Bill addresses the treatment of dogs, cats and other animals used in experimentation in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Senate previously passed SB 381 unanimously, and on Thursday the House Judiciary Committee advanced an amended version of the bill by a unanimous 26–0 vote.
The bill now needs to continue moving through the House and receive a vote before the end of session.
Please contact your state representative and ask them to support SB 381 and help get it across the finish line. Find your Pennsylvania legislators.
There are only a limited number of legislative days remaining this session and our state representatives need to hear from all of us so they know how important this bill is to their constituents. Please make your calls and send your messages now.
Thank you for continuing to speak up for animals across Pennsylvania. Please share this alert with other Pennsylvanians who care about animals!
