Cleveland Design Community and Friends,
The AIA Cleveland Design Awards Committee is pleased to announce that the 2020 Cleveland Design Awards Program will be held “virtually” on Friday, November 6
th
. By holding this year’s program virtually, AIA Cleveland can ensure the safety of its members while continuing the tradition and momentum of our annual Design Awards Program. Our event will be broadcast live just as if we were all still in the same room and will also simulcast on our Facebook and Youtube accounts. This event will be free to stream, providing access to this program for those who have never had the opportunity to previously attend in person. We encourage you to tune in from home, or in small “socially-distant” groups at the office to celebrate Cleveland Design Excellence with friends and colleagues.
To help address these issues, we have made specific changes to the 2020 Design Awards Program. First, all project submission entry fees have been reduced in cost roughly between 20%-25%. There will be no fee to “virtually” attend this year’s ceremony. Additionally, the Design Awards have historically served as the chapter’s largest fundraiser of the year. This year, we feel that those proceeds could be better served in the hands of other important community organizations. Therefore, all proceeds from the 2020 Cleveland Design Awards will instead be split equally between the following three organizations;
The National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) Cleveland Chapter. (Learn more

)
The National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) mission is to champion diversity within the design professions by promoting the excellence, community engagement, and professional development of its members.
ACE Mentor Cleveland (Learn more
HERE
)
ACE Mentor Program of America is a free, award-winning, afterschool program for high school students interested in pursuing careers in the Architecture, Construction and Engineering industry, including skilled trades.
The Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless (Learn more
HERE
)
Since 1988, we have sought to break the cycle of homelessness in Northeast Ohio. We organize and empower homeless and at-risk men, women, and children through public education, advocacy, and the creation of nurturing environments.
During the build-up for this year’s awards program, there will be several opportunities for you to join our efforts in donating to these three organizations.
Our Call for Entries document has been published in this newsletter and can be found on our Cleveland Design Awards web page at
www.aiacleveland.com/designawards
. The Open Water portal for online submissions will be available on Monday, July 27
th
to begin uploading your projects. All submissions are due on Friday, September 25
th
. This year’s jury chair will also be a first for our chapter. We are extremely excited about this year’s selection and believe it will bring an entirely new dynamic to our awards program. Although confirmed, we are not ready yet to share this fantastic news just yet! An announcement of the jury chair will be forthcoming along with awards program information in the coming weeks.
It is our sincere hope that you will participate in this year’s program, and we look forward to 2021 where we can reconvene in person and continue to build upon the momentum of our awards program.
Sincerely,
|

An
important
message from Timothy Hawk, Chair of AIA Government Advocacy Committee:
Last February, AIA members sent more than 11,400 letters to the White House condemning the mandated designation of "classical" architecture as the preferred style for all federal courthouses, all federal public buildings in the Capital region, and all other federal public buildings with an anticipated cost exceeding $50 million. Additionally, on February 6 and February 20, AIA leadership issued letters to the Trump administration strongly opposing the proposed order.
Our team has stayed connected to this issue, and AIA recently received confirmation from White House staff that the administration may soon release the executive order as a final order. In anticipation of a final order, on July 13, 2020, Rep. Dina Titus (D-NV-1) introduced the “Democracy in Design Act” (H.R. 7604).
This legislation would override the executive order by directing “the Administrator of General Services to ensure that the construction and acquisition of public buildings in the United States adhere to the Guiding Principles for Federal Architecture.” These guidelines, developed in 1962, establish a framework for design excellence driven by the unique conditions of each locale.
Congress has the power to ensure this executive order never takes effect – it is critical that we
show our support
for this legislation. Please contact your Member of Congress
NOW
and
ask them to co-sponsor
the “Democracy in Design Act” to stop this one-size-fits-all federal mandate on design.

AIA Re-Occupancy Assessment Tool
Architects and allied professionals are in a unique position to coordinate a range of mitigation strategies that, in aggregate, reduce the risk of exposure to and transmission of COVID-19 within non-health care settings. The goal of this assessment tool is to promote best practices that protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public while creating opportunities for businesses, schools, restaurants, and other non-essential facilities to provide services.

This document provides architects, private clients, and civic leaders a framework of strategies for reoccupying buildings and businesses that are in the process of transitioning from being fully closed to fully open; including:
- baseline parameters for re-occupancy
- architectural and engineering strategies for site and site arrival, building envelope, fixtures and furnishings, plumbing and HVAC
