DID YOU KNOW??

May is Mental Health Awareness Month (since 1949)—a time to educate, empower, and remind one another that mental health is just as important as physical health. At Become Their Voice, this month holds deep meaning. Our mission began after the heartbreaking loss of our son Sebastian to fentanyl poisoning, and we’ve seen firsthand how unaddressed mental health challenges can lead down a dangerous path.

This month, we’re joining voices across the country to shine a light on the importance of early mental health education, open conversations, and access to support. The 2025 theme is “Your Story Matters”, and we couldn’t agree more. Every story shared helps reduce stigma, connect others, and offer hope.

We believe that prevention starts with awareness—and awareness starts with all of us. Whether you’re sharing your own journey, supporting a loved one, or advocating for change in schools and communities, you are making a difference.

Let’s use this month to speak up, reach out, and continue to fight for a future where no life is lost to silence or stigma.

Relationships and Connecting

Last month, we had the opportunity to meet with Director Carney at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA), where he shared the Academy’s pressing need for facility improvements and expanded training resources. We highlighted this in our previous newsletter, noting how these limitations are affecting both the flow and efficiency of core training — and limiting the Academy’s ability to incorporate critical mental health education for future officers. Recognizing the importance of this issue, we were able to connect Director Carney with Congressman Zach Nunn.

Given Congressman Nunn’s military background and his recent introduction of the Improving Law Enforcement Officer Safety and Wellness Through Data Act, we believed he would be a strong advocate for the ILEA’s mission. During his visit, Congressman Nunn chose to hold a press conference at the Academy to announce the GUARD Act, which focuses on protecting seniors from scams — further reinforcing his commitment to public safety at every level.

Iowa Alliance for Drug Endangered Children Conference

When: May 5th, 2025

Where: FFA Enrichment Center, Ankeny

We’re honored to share that we’ve been invited to speak at the Iowa Alliance for Drug Endangered Children Conference on May 5th.

This important event brings together professionals from across the state who are working to protect and support children impacted by substance use and trauma. We’re grateful for the opportunity to share our story, highlight the growing connection between mental health and substance abuse, and continue advocating for youth and families.

First Responders: Underlying Factors Contributing to Substance Abuse

Substance abuse among first responders is a significant concern, influenced by the high-stress, trauma-exposed nature of their work. Studies indicate that first responders are more susceptible to substance use disorders compared to the general population.

Exposure to Trauma: Frequent encounters with death, violence, and disasters can lead to PTSD and other mental health issues.

Workplace Culture: In some departments, alcohol consumption is normalized as a coping mechanism.

Physical Demands: Chronic pain from injuries may lead to prescription drug misuse.

Stigma and Silence: A culture of silence around mental health and substance abuse may prevent individuals from seeking help.

Legislative Spotlight: FACTS Act Targets Fentanyl Awareness in Schools

In a bipartisan effort to combat the rising threat of fentanyl among youth, Representatives Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) and Kevin Kiley (R-CA) introduced the Fentanyl Awareness for Children and Teens in Schools (FACTS) Act. This legislation aims to educate students about the dangers of counterfeit pills laced with fentanyl by replicating successful local programs, such as Oregon's "Fake and Fatal" curriculum.

The bill proposes a $50 million pilot program to fund education initiatives, public awareness campaigns, and staff training over the next three years. By fostering collaboration between schools and public health departments, the FACTS Act seeks to equip young people with the knowledge to make safe choices and prevent accidental poisonings.

Authorities arrested at least 14 individuals across five states, including alleged ringleader Heriberto Salazar Amaya.
