April 2026

Message from ESFL Executive Director

Hello Everyone!

April is the perfect time to invest in the skills that shape a stronger, more confident you. This month we celebrate two important causes... limb loss/limb difference as well as Occupational Therapy month!

We felt this month was a great time to release Version 2 of Hands Free Catalog. The catalog has been viewed over 5,000 times in over 50+ countries! Version 2 contains 25 additional pages of content, items and resources, all split into various ADL categories. Please read from MJ Dillard, a quad amputee sepsis survivor, below on her thoughts about the catalog and the nuggets she picked up from being a reviewer.

Limb Loss/Limb Difference Awareness Month

Every April is a time to recognize the limb loss and limb different community and the vital need to support efforts that advance equitable medical access, care, and coverage. You can mark this month by sharing your story, advocating for your needs, educating people, and make sure no one with limb difference is alone. LLLDAM is a perfect opportunity to learn more about the community and how you can get involved.

Occupational Therapy Month

April is also Occupational Therapy Month so we also want to send a special shout out to the amazing OT's around the world who help those in our Enhancing Skills for Life community return to various levels of independence in their daily life.

Please keep scrolling for all of the latest ESFL news and updates.

Warm Regards,

ESFL NAC Adaptive Ski Experience

ELEVEN members from our ESFL community traveled to the National Ability Center Ranch in Park City, UT from March 30-April 3, 2026. Our group consisted of 7 individuals living with quadruple limb loss and 4 individuals living with bilateral upper limb loss/difference along with their family members/friends. We had a fantastic time participating in various activities at the NAC ranch like Archery, Yoga, Rock Climbing, Cycling, Pickleball and Equine Assisted Learning. Despite the warm temps and lack of snow at the base, the NAC still figured out a way to get us on the slopes. It was a truly magical experience. We hope to make more of these experiences happen for our ESFL community!

We are also incredibly thankful for the support of Hanger Clinic's local Salt Lake City team for their time and assistance with all things prosthetic repair related.

This experience has been made possible through generous grant from the National Ability Center along with additional support from the Hanger Foundation.

Skills for Life 7 Slideshow!

One of our favorite things to do is take various photos and videos from our Skills for Life workshops and put them to music. The SFL 7 workshop which was held in Houston, TX in October 2025 welcomed over 400 attendees, 114 of which were living without both hands or more. The music for this video is "Say I Won't" by Mercy Me. The song was written for their road manager, Gary Miracle who is a quad amputee sepsis survivor. A HUGE thank you to Samoana Matagi, our online programs manager for putting this beuatiful keepsake together.

Are you new to the Limb Difference/Amputee community?

I am so excited that the new edition of the Hands Free catalog is out. This is a great place to start orienting oneself in the limb difference/amputee world.

As a new amputee, when I first found the ESFL website, I was a bit overwhelmed. I skimmed through the catalog and figured I could look things up online as I needed them. Guess what? I didn't know what I needed, how hard it was to find the right name for adaptive items or that they aren't all in one place.

When I was asked to review the catalog prior to its release, a new world opened to me. Going through everything in the catalog was eye opening. It was like the perfect roadmap to all things I needed to feel like I was part of a large welcoming community.

I highly recommend spending some time with this catalog. It is amazing with all the adaptive products that are out there and how well they are organized by need. The catalog is fully digital, easily accessible, with links and pictures, as well as descriptions of adaptive equipment and useful gadgets. There is a direct link to the ESFL Amazon Shopping list where the adaptive products that are available on Amazon are grouped by need just like the catalog.

The resource section is amazing. There are connections to service animals, how to modify your home, prosthetic manufacturers, how to drive again, pediatric friendly resources, adaptive clothing, portable wheelchairs, travel tips, organizations that support amputee and limb difference, professional support services, grants, scholarships, links to videos demonstrating how to complete ADL tasks and so much more!
