South Central LAMP spread the love and celebrated Valentine's Day in style, as our children, moms and staff participated in our Valentine's Spirit Week!
We kicked off the week with a super cozy pajama day, much to the excitement of the children! Then, on Valentine's Day, our theme was "bring a sweet treat to share." Our adult program exchanged Valentine's cards and drank hot cocoa, and our children's program enjoyed donuts and cupcakes. Our staff was happy to join in on the scrumptious treats!
We continued the festivities on Thursday with everyone wearing their favorite Disney character shirts, and we finished off our week of love with a festive red and pink day. Spirit week is always so joyful, as we get to set aside time to show our love to those around us in our community.

Adult Education Program Update
|
|
The incredible mothers of our Family Literacy Program spread the warmth of love and friendship this Valentine's Day in a heartwarming celebration, where they crafted their own unique Valentine's Day cards filled with uplifting messages for one another.
Also, we have some exciting news!
Our new Parent Workshops began on February 22, on Zoom and in-person. Open to all parents and caregivers, these sessions cover topics such as age-appropriate expectations, fostering autonomy, and handling challenging behaviors, to connect, learn, and share experiences. Also, our in-person ESL Classes will begin today, and will explore topics like art galleries, US national parks, and international/cultural food. Participants will be enhancing language skills in a supportive, interactive environment, building lasting connections in our community.

The Million Word Challenge addresses the issue of reading proficiency and helps students develop habits that will make them educationally successful. Every year, we challenge our students to read millions of words outside of the classroom with their families.
All our classes, including our parents and EXPL Afterschool program are encouraged to participate! At the end of each week, our students bring in their reading logs to tally the total number of pages read. The preschool student currently taking the lead is Amy, with 263 pages read. In the Afterschool Program, the student in the lead for her classroom is Daisy with 900 pages!
Each classroom has a chart to keep track of who is reading the most. Our Infant lead teacher, Maria Soriano, and the rest of her team graphed their The Million Word Challenge with a thermometer. Pre-K lead teacher, Carla Silva, and her team wowed us with their Valentine's themed graph for their children's challenge as well. The EXPL Afterschool Program is using a road to track, and two students (Chanel and Junior) are pictured with prizes for milestones reached. We are wowed by their creativity!
