Compass of Carolina Releases 2023 Impact Report

We evaluated four elements of Compass to ultimately understand the impact made to Upstate SC. This report walks through those elements and touches on the impact results and demographics of those served in 2023.

"Compass of Carolina positively impacts the lives of the most vulnerable in the community," stated John Riddle, Board Co-Chairman. While Laurie Rovin, Executive Director added "2023 was a year full of new beginnings. It is your support and trust in our work that has sustained us for 105 years."

Employee Spotlight

Meet Misha Gibson, she is a Licensed Independent Social Worker with Clinical Practice (LISW-CP). She is passionate about helping individuals, families and groups, especially within the LGBTQ+ community that she is also a part of.

Misha is also passionate about serving marginalized communities and being an activist and advocating for others.

Along with counseling, she facilitates our newest group Second Chance. This is a group for adolescents with behavioral problems or high truancy and their guardian that takes place on Tuesday evenings, including a light meal.

When not working, Misha enjoys being home with her partner Megan, their three cats, one dog and two horses.

Client Testimony

Meet Jennifer, she is a graduate of Compass of Carolina's Anger Management Program.

The class dramatically changed her life! She had been ordered by the courts to take this class or go to jail. After completing the 12-week psychoeducational course she never reverted back to former ways of aggressive behavior and was never re-arrested.

Twenty-Seven years later, with grandchildren of her own, she was in an apartment fire where according to her testimony, she helped to save 17 people.

Just imagine how different her life would have been without the compassionate direction that was given by Compass of Carolina. She was dedicated to the program, put in the work and found the right path for her life!

Compass of Carolina Participates in United Way Hands on Greenville 2024

Saturday, April 20 was no ordinary day - it was United Way's Hands On Greenville Day! Compass of Carolina teamed with local Fountain Inn businesses to help Ms. Connie with rebuilding of her unsafe, rotten deck and full yard beautification.

Ms. Connie and her husband was a former client of Compass becoming "part of the family" in early 2000s. Sadly, Ms. Connie lost her husband a few years ago to cancer then developed a few health concerns of her own. This left her unable to maintain the yard and afford repairs/maintenance to her deck. Living off social security alone has been an adjustment for her and she stretches every dollar she has for necessities.

This is where Compass of Carolina came together and selected Ms. Connie for the 2024 HOG Day blessing. A team of 17 volunteers worked for a total of 135 hours the week of and actual event day. The large back deck was demolished and rebuilt, the house and garage were pressure washed, the entire front and back yards were mowed, a large mulch bed was de-weeded and mulched, flowers were planted around the front and sides of the house and mulch spread, over-grown tree limbs were cut back and leaves were raked / blown from the fence line. It was a total transformation that collectively we are so proud of and Ms. Connie couldn't be more thankful!
