Heavenly Father, you sent your own Son into this world. We thank you for the lives of our children, entrusted to our care. Help us to remember that we are all your children, and so to love and nurture them that they may attain to that full stature intended for them in your eternal kingdom; for the sake of your dear Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN. (BCP 1979, p 841)
This collect is from the treasury of prayers you may find near the back of your prayer book, from page 814 through page 841. There are prayers of thanksgiving, petition, and lament for just about everything life brings. This is one is intended for prayer at the birth of a child, but it can be used for giving thanks and concerning ourselves with the nurture and protection of our children at every stage of life.
Part of this is about protecting everyone from abuse. The Episcopal Church requires that our programs and spaces comply with national Safe Church standards that cover programs and space use and access. Every person who holds a key to our church or hall must have completed safeguarding training. A recent audit demonstrated that a significant number of keys to our facilities have been distributed without clear records. To assure our compliance with the canons and codes for safe church practices, we are rekeying the buildings, beginning this week.
To receive a new key, you will need to complete safe church training via online courses, otherwise please be advised that building access will be available during our office hours, Tuesday-Friday 10am to 2pm, Sunday mornings, and by appointment. To begin the process of receiving a new key, please contact Cassandra.
Since the demolition of the Carr-Rice building, Trinity Church has not had adequate and compliant space for our nursery and children’s ministry programs. The use of space previously set aside in the basement of Honyman Hall had to be discontinued per state code, which dictates that program space for children under 6 years of age may not be under ground level. These facts, as well as the pandemic, effectively froze our Children’s ministry program.
The construction of the new building, utilizing the existing Carr-Rice foundation, will provide several ground-level spaces for our children, youth, and adult educational programs. These include a dedicated nursery space with its own restroom (appointed with child-sized fixtures), a lactation room for nursing mothers, a classroom purpose-designed for Godly Play (an interactive Montessori-based educational curriculum for young children), and a multi-use classroom for older children and adult education classes. The new plan is being finalized by the appointed design committee. It is thoughtfully designed in such a way that additional ground-level space may be added in the future, when needed. We look forward to sharing the design with the parish on our feast day, Trinity Sunday, which is June 12th this year.
These spaces, purposefully built and intentionally appointed for families and children, will provide a clear message to parents that they and their children are very welcome, and safe, at Trinity. They will create space ideal to developing the faith of the next generation of Christians, our future leaders and ministers in training. My own journey as a priest began with my spiritual development in the children and youth ministry programs that formed my faith. Many of you have spoken fondly of your memories in our formation programs in the past, both as participants and teachers. It is far past time for our parish to give that same gift to others.
Thank you for your support, understanding, and the intentionality of your prayer and giving for the future of the Church, at Trinity and beyond!
Pax,
Tim+

To meet today’s challenges and be here for future generations, we know that we must:
- Expand our outreach and community meal offerings
- Offer programs for children and families
- Make our spaces accessible for everyone
- House our music program
We do not have the space that we need to do these things.
Trinity is:
-
renovating the 70 year old kitchen in Honyman Hall. Cost $175,000
-
building a new building on the slab containing classrooms, restrooms and offices. Cost $1M
-
renovating Honyman Hall focusing on the exterior, rest rooms, relocating the choir to the second floor and securing storage space in the basement. Cost $300,000
It will mean:
- An enhancement of our community meal program. The current kitchen is so limited that we have few menu options that we can offer for the number of guests that we host.
- An expansion of our Sunday School, Nursery School, and youth programs. Right now we have no suitable space other than a “one room school house” for Christian education. As our children are now entering the primary grades, we need to offer classes at different levels of sophistication.
- Handicapped accessibility so that everyone can meet with clergy in comfort and privacy and in ADA compliance
