CHURCH BY THE POND

September 19, 2026

“Yeah, but…”

That is usually my thought as I listen to today’s Gospel, which focuses on the generous landowner who gives all of his workers the same wage regardless of the time they began work. He paid the agreed price to all and he used his own funds to generously compensate workers. “Yeah, but,” my human obsession with fairness cries. Father Patrick Bush reminded us that God has the right to grant His grace to anyone he chooses; even those we feel are not deserving of his grace. We should not be resentful nor jealous of God’s generosity.

This was a particularly pleasant day at Church by the Pond: No heat, wind, cold, rain. We were blessed to have a congregation of newcomers and returning friends. After sharing prayers and Holy Communion with thirty-seven people, lunches were given out. St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Rocky Hill generously provided bagged lunches for forty-eight guests.

THE SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY

AFTER PENTECOST

We are many members, yet one body in Christ.

Somos muchos miembros, pero un solo cuerpo en Cristo.

On this, the Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost, our Eucharistic Saint was our bilingual Homecoming service, carried out by The Rev. Melina Dezhbod and The Rev. Ramon Antonio Garcia, at 9:30 a.m.

The preaching was provided by The Ven. Bonnie Matthews, who exhorted us not to disobey God, fleeing from our responsibility before the call we have received for the sacred mission. She invited us to recognize that the one who changes people’s hearts for repentance is God, and that it is only up to us to deliver the message.

We also received the invitation to be compassionate and merciful with our peers and not pretend that we are worthy of privileges because we are Christians; that our task is not to condemn; and that, just as we value the manifestation of God’s grace in every detail of our existence, we must recognize his immense mercy for all humanity and for creation in general, because God always gives much more than we deserve. But we must avoid falling into the trap of believing that we have accumulated some right, by which we can decide what each one deserves, because that is a right that only corresponds to God.

At 11 a.m. we had our usual hospitality meeting.

Yokai are derived from Japanese folklore and come in human, animal, or even inanimate forms, sometimes at the same time! Images of Yokai are often fantastic, bizarre, mysterious, grotesque, sometimes haunting or humorous, and overall, simply wonderful. They prove to be a natural basis for jazz improvisation.

New Season of Creation

Daily Devotions

Most of us know very little about the great web of life that surrounds us. Through Oct. 4, the Province One EcoRegion will be offering daily devotions throughout the “Season of Creation” designed to open our eyes to some of the “created ones” with whom we share common ground. These devotions will highlight a different keystone species in our Province One EcoRegion each day, including a photo, a brief description, and thoughts on how the species reflects our image of God followed by a closing prayer. The devotions will be prepared by Episcopalians from around Province One.

Sign up to receive the devotions via the link below.
