2023 East Bridgewater Citizen of The Year
Heather Craven
Sachem Rock Community Center in East Bridgewater
April 11, 7p

Join Rotary Club of the Bridgewater's on Tuesday April 11th at 7p at the Center at Sachem Rock to award Heather Craven EB's Citizen of the Year Award. After her daughter’s death, Heather created the Sydney Craven Memorial Fund (a.k.a. Sparkle Fund) in her daughter’s memory.
Heather & her husband, Shane, moved to EB in 2012. Logan and Sydney were born on March 28, 2013. Fraternal twins. They were the most perfect babies with the most perfect personalities. 9 days shy of their second birthday Sydney didn't wake up and passed away unexpectedly from SUD-C (Sudden Unexpected Death of a Child). Craven used her pain and grief to create something truly special, the Sydney Craven Memorial fund is a non-profit organization that provides children and families in need in East Bridgewater. As Heather and Shane have continued to grow their family here: " Maddox was born on September 12, 2016. Few years later we completed our family on February 4th, 2020 with a little girl named Lillie. Currently Logan is 10 years old, Maddox is 6.5 years old, and Lillie is 3 years old." Heather Craven has helped hundreds of individuals and families through the organization, placed a bench outside of the Central School, and a book box was donated so kids can read at the bench. sydneycraven.com Please Join us to celebrate Heather Craven’s incredible achievements!

Historical Tidbit:
Personal Account of The Hurricane of '38 From One of Our Readers.

"I enjoyed that blurb (EB Historical Tidbit last week) about the hurricane of ’38. I remember that! I was only 2 years old, but I remember walking over to my parents’ bedroom window (my crib was in their bedroom) and holding onto the window sill and looking out the window. I was shocked to see our pear tree lying across the driveway!
Of course in reality, it was only a branch that had been blown off of the pear tree, NOT the whole tree! That’s all I remember about the storm."
~Betty (Belnap) Stirling

Ed note: Thank you, Betty, for that remembrance.
It's wild that you remember something your 2 year old self saw.

Communication is more than just talking and listening—it’s also about sending and receiving messages through attitude, tone of voice, and body language. As the disease progresses, individuals living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias lose the ability to use words, but families can find new ways to connect.

Join us to explore how communication changes when someone is living with Alzheimer's, learn how to interpret the verbal and behavioral communication, and identify strategies to help you connect and communicate at each stage of the disease.

South Shore Recycling Cooperative

To address the climate, Massachusetts recently elected Melissa Hoffer as its first Climate Chief in the Office of Climate Innovation and Resilience. The office in charge of resources and authority available to the Governor and executive department to advance climate change innovation, and resilience policies.

At the local level, South Shore Recycling Cooperative (SSRC) is a resource. The SSRC is a voluntary association of South Shore municipalities established in 1998. It helps its member municipalities improve their recycling programs, and reduce the quantity, toxicity and cost of disposal in a number of ways. Some include maintenance of solid waste programs, educating residents about waste management, and advocating for funding and regulations that minimize waste while maximizing recovery of useful materials. Their bimonthly newsletter highlights local opportunities to make a difference. Subscribe ssrcoop.info/newsletters. Find out more about the Office of Climate Innovation and Resilience

Planning Council

OCPC is currently undertaking a study of the Route 18 corridor in the towns of Bridgewater and East Bridgewater. As part of the study, OCPC has developed a public outreach program to garner input from the public, regarding thoughts on what types of problems exist, where traffic problems exist within the corridor, and potential improvements/fixes for these problems.

The purpose of this study is to address traffic congestion and improve safety, circulation, and mobility for all road users. This is also being used to coordinate any recommendations with planned road projects and planned development. The study’s final report will be completed in September 2023. You are the center of the universe AND you are a speck of dust.
This old Hebrew teaching about our ego speaks to me today. Rabbi Simcha Bunim, a great Polish Hasidic master at the turn of the 19th century, taught: “Everyone must have two pockets, with a note in each pocket, so that he or she can reach into one or the other, depending on the need.”

Every single day, we should feel worthy, loved, appreciated. If we don’t, we “should reach into one pocket, and, there, find the words: ‘Bishvili nivra ha-olam’ The world was created for me." (BT Sanhedrin 37B). I will say it now to you, dear reader; you are worthy, loved, appreciated. Take care of yourself, eat right, exercise. Today, your smiling face is more important than ever.

And also, when we feel full of ourselves, unjustly put out: “one should reach into the other pocket, and find the words: ‘V’anochi afar v’efer’ I am but dust and ashes." (Gen. 18:27).
That way we carry both at once: As tiny as an ant and at the same time knowing how important we are. Today and always, each of us has an important role to play in keeping our community strong. Making eye contact and sharing joy are important. Call each other, write notes, create public art. The need continues.
Our impact is huge. Ants can carry up to 40 x their weight, we are a speck, but we are mighty.
~ Jacquie
