News & Events

Church offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 15 in observance of MLK Jr. Day.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service project returns to St. James and our Hendersonville community. Please consider joining us on MLK Day – Monday, Jan. 15 at noon in Stillwell Hall to repackage 50 lbs. of rice and beans to donate to the Storehouse. This project has been well received as an important source of meals for food-insecure people in our area. We will be joined by Rev. Terry Young, pastor at St. Paul Tabernacle AME Zion, and Rev. Eric Gash, pastor at Speak Life Community church. We will open with a brief program focused on the life and words of Dr. King, then we will bag the dried beans and rice. This event is sponsored by other local faith communities and organizations and all are welcome to participate. Thank you as always for your support.

St. James Annual Meeting

Jan. 21 at 11 a.m.

Join us at 11 a.m. in the Parish hall for our Annual Meeting to hear reports and updates about our common life together, including a budget presentation and election of Vestry members. The 10:15 a.m. Eucharist will be abbreviated significantly on this day.

It's not too late to return your commitment card for 2024! Your commitment makes a difference! Thank you to all those who have already returned their stewardship commitment cards for 2024. Your commitment makes a difference! It's not too late to return your commitment card by mail, in-person or even online.

Worship

Choir is an important and exciting ministry at St. James. We sing for most of the 10:15 services throughout the year, and some additional services as well such as Advent Lessons & Carols and Evensong. If you have ever considered joining the Choir, now would be a very opportune time.  We are rehearsing music for Epiphany, Lent, and Easter. Rehearsals are Wednesday night from 7-8:30 p.m. If you are interested, please contact Director of Music Brad Gee.

Plan now to attend the next Celtic Eucharist on Sunday, Jan. 28 at 5 p.m. Harpist Lelia Lattimore will play a quiet prelude and Lisa Whitfield and Allelu! will lead music for this contemplative candlelit service.

Gluten-free wafers are available during communion for those with celiac disease or medical issues. You may request this gluten-free option at communion from the priest.

Adult Formation

Centering Prayer with Chris and Rev. Wendy Pinzino will continue every Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. in the Chapel. Please join us in this deeply meaningful practice.

Due to last Tuesdays' inclement weather, Short Stories for the Soul has been rescheduled for this Tuesday, Jan. 16 at noon in the St. James Room. Bring your lunch and join us for a soul-stretching conversation about the short story, "A Village After Dark" by Kazuo Ishiguro. Readings can be found on the Adult Formation page on our website. SSS meets the Second Tuesday of every month in the St. James Room.

Star of Wonder and the Search for Awe

Jan. 7-Feb. 4, excluding Jan. 21

Trinity Room

Where do you find awe and wonder in our world? Join us for an exploration of Epiphany, the liturgical season most often associated with wonder, as we consider why wonder matters—especially in our modern, scientific, and often cynical world. We'll be using Dacher Keltner's new book Awe as a guide and encourage you to purchase one for this series.

Outreach Presents: Learning from Our Dreamers

Sunday, Feb. 11 at 9 a.m. in the Trinity Room

Join us for this special conversation with the students that St. James sponsors at Blue Ridge Community College. These are DREAM Act Students who have lived in the United States their whole lives and can go to college through our sponsorship. Without this assistance, they would have to pay significantly higher out-of-state tuition rates. Join us as they say thank you and share their educational and vocational dreams.

Getting to Know St. James and the Episcopal Church

Sundays, Feb. 18-Sunday, March. 24 at 9 a.m. in the St. James Room

During these Sundays, we will give an overview and introduction to the Episcopal Church and St. James' place in it. Perfect for newcomers, visitors, or those wishing to renew or dive deeper into their understanding of faith in the Episcopal tradition. Participants are eligible for confirmation, reaffirmation of faith, or reception.

Ministry & Fellowship

Calling all St. James artists and crafts-people!

Here's your chance to showcase your artwork and enjoy an evening with parishioners and friends! Artist registration has launched for our 2024 Art & Soul Gala & Silent Auction on Saturday, March 16 from 3-5:30 p.m. in Stillwell Hall. We are thrilled to extend an invitation to all St. James artists and craftspeople to participate in an opportunity to sell your artwork and enter an item in the silent auction. You can choose to keep all of the proceeds from your sales or donate a portion to a St. James ministry of your choice. SAVE THE DATE for The Fat Tuesday Feast with Feed the Kids on Tuesday, Feb. 13 in Stillwell Hall! Celebrate the Feast before the Lenten Fast with Feed the Kids Coalition. We’ll be serving a delicious meal prepared by our very own Feed the Kids ministry. All proceeds go to our Feed the Kids ministry which provides cooked meals for food insecure families in our county. Registration begins next week so stay tuned!

The St. James Endowment Board is pleased to announce that we still have funding available in our 2023 cycle for (1) outreach ministries, (2) seed money for new ministries and special one-time projects, (3) capital improvements and major maintenance projects of the parish. Accordingly, we will again receive applications for 2023 Endowment distribution awards to the extent that funding is available. Our Treasurer reports that we have $21,000 available for this mid-cycle award opportunity!

Join us Sunday, Jan. 28 at 9 a.m. in Stillwell Hall at our Newcomer Café for light refreshments, coffee and fun fellowship with other newcomers and long-time members. Whether you are new to the area, looking for a spiritual home or started attending months ago, we pray you have been blessed by the worship and that our parish will continue to be a blessing to you. If you have children, we would love to have them join us! Please RSVP to Diane Jacober at jacoberd@bellsouth.net or call the church office at 828-693-7458.

Justice & Mercy

The Thursday Thrift Shop is in need of donations of clothing for ladies and men, all sizes, and for children, especially sizes 2T to 8. If you're cleaning out your closet please keep the thrift shop in mind. Sales of clothing accounts for nearly 35% of our annual sales and our current inventory is very low. As always, all donations are appreciated.

Stewardship Tip from the Creation Care Ministry: Did you know? You very likely have clothing with fabric made from soda bottles. Reclaimed plastic is spun into a fine thread here in North Carolina at Unifi in Yadkinville. Brands like Patagonia, North Face, Hagar, and many others use this material for their products.

Children & Family Ministry

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Sunday School is offered every Sunday at 10 a.m. for ages 2 through 5th grade. Children will return to the church during the Peace.

The next EYC is Sunday, Jan. 14 from 5-7:30 p.m. All teenagers are invited for food, faith, and fun!

Offering envelopes for the new year are located at the reception desk. Feel free to pick up a pack if needed.

Reminder: The deadline for bulletin announcements is Tuesdays at noon. Please email Mindy detailed information along with any attachments.

Contribute to the beauty of worship by dedicating flowers

in thanksgiving, in honor of, or in memory of loved ones or to commemorate special occasions such as birthdays, and anniversaries.

You can select any date in the coming year you'd like. On most Sundays, we will include those to whom the flowers are dedicated in our Prayers of the People at the 10:15 a.m. service as well as noting it in every service bulletin.
