Superintendent's Weekly Message

Dear HBCSD Families,

We are pleased to share that the Hermosa Beach City School District Board has approved the 2026–27 school year calendar.

In developing the calendar, careful consideration was given to aligning closely with the Manhattan Beach Unified School District (MBUSD) calendar.

This alignment supports the many HBCSD students and families who transition to Mira Costa High School and participate in MBUSD summer academic and athletic programs, helping reduce scheduling challenges for families with children in both districts.

Key dates for the 2026–27 school year include:

  • First Day of School: August 19, 2026
  • Thanksgiving Break: November 23 - 27, 2026
  • Winter Break: December 21, 2026 – January 1, 2027
  • President’s Week: February 15 – 19, 2027
  • Spring Break: April 5 – 9, 2027
  • Last Day of School: June 10, 2027

Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

Warm regards,

Dr. Susan Wildes

Hermosa View School Principal News

Dear View Families,

This past Friday, we celebrated our SURF Award Winners along with our students with great attendance. We are so proud of our students who have been Safe, Up for the Challenge, Respectful and Friendly. Please continue to help reinforce these expectations at home. We also had a great performance by Ms. Speese’s Class who sang, “Moving Up to 1st Grade!” To top it off, our Principal of the Day, Emily Green, made sure to keep us SURFing throughout the day. She did a great job!

Our next Principal Advisory Council Meeting will be this Wednesday, May 20th from 9-10am.

This Thursday, May 21st, we are so excited to welcome everyone to Hermosa View’s Open House. Here is our schedule:

Preschool Class Visits: 8-8:45am

View Scholastic Book Fair: 4-6pm

TK-1st Grade Class Visits: 5:30-6:30pm

We look forward to showing off all the hard work our kids have been doing this year!

Looking ahead, our 1st graders will be taking a field trip to Vista on June 1st to check out their new school. Look out for a permission slip in your child’s backpack. I can hardly believe we have just one month left with our 1st graders.

We are in need of extra clothes (i.e., underwear, pants, sock, etc) to keep in our office for students who might need a change during the day. If you have donations, please send it our way! Lastly, parents, please no texting in the valet line. It poses a significant safety risk and slows down traffic.

Looking forward to a great week ahead!

Warmly,

Dr. Jessica Ghobrial

Hermosa View Principal / HB Preschool Director

Hermosa Vista School Principal News

Dear Vista Families,

Students have worked diligently over the past two weeks completing their ELA and Math CAASPP assessments. Next week, we will conduct make-up testing for any students who were absent or need additional time to finish. As we begin to approach the end of the school year, please remind students of the importance of maintaining strong effort and meeting our expectations. Students are expected to continue being Safe, Up for a Challenge, Respectful, and Friendly in all areas of the Vista campus.

On Tuesday, May 19th, students will have the opportunity to visit the MPR and explore a variety of engaging careers. Each grade level will attend during their lunch period to hear from guest speakers about different professions. Students will receive an explorer sheet from their teachers, where they will reflect on three booths by describing the job and sharing one interesting fact they learned. Completed sheets can be submitted for a chance to win a fun prize. We look forward to welcoming our parent volunteers who will be sharing their career experiences with our students.

As the year is coming to an end, I would like to put some important dates on your radar:

  • May 4-22nd: CAASPP Testing for 3rd and 4th Grade
  • May 19th @ 11:40-1:15pm: Career Day

CAASPP TESTING: Parent Tips

  • Explain to your child that these tests are used as tools to help them learn, and that they should not be anxious or scared.
  • Remind your child that you and their teacher want them to try their very best and are there to help, every step of the way.
  • Ensure they get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive at school on time each day. Attendance is key.
  • Explore the practice tests with your child on the CAASPP and ELPAC Practice and Training web page so they can become familiar with the platform and setup of the tests.

To learn more about these tests go to the CAASPP Starting Smarter website or review the CDE Parent Guides to Understanding web page.

Hermosa Valley School Principal News

Dear Valley Families,

Thank you for your support throughout CAASPP testing. We appreciated the focus, effort, and determination shown by our students here at Valley, as well as the encouragement from home that helped set them up for success. We are proud of the way our students approached testing and tried their best each day.

CAST Testing is happening this upcoming week for 5th and 8th grade students. For 8th grade, this will take place directly in their science classes with no modified schedule.

Advanced Math Information:

  • Incoming Grades 7th and 8th

Students not currently enrolled in advanced math who are interested in being considered for placement in an advanced math course for the 2026–2027 school year may opt in to take the placement test on Wednesday, June 3rd, from 2:00–3:00 PM.

  • Incoming Grade 6th

Advanced math placement from 5th to 6th grade will be done a little differently this year. We will place students in advanced math based on testing data and will not require an additional assessment for entry. If you are interested in learning more about advanced math for 6th grade, check out the Course Catalog HERE. We will communicate with all families directly regarding our recommendation and provide an opportunity for parent confirmation prior to the close of school.

BMX Go Big Assembly will be held for grades 5th–8th this upcoming Wednesday, performed by top role model athletes coupled with anti-bullying messaging brought to us by HBPD.

Electives Request Letter – On Friday we sent out a reminder for the Electives Request Letter to parents. If you have not reviewed the electives your student has requested and submitted the form HERE (which was due Friday, May 15th), please take a moment to do that ASAP.

This is a message from our 8th grade students surrounding a new tutoring program, born out of the Wholeheartedly event earlier in the school year. Our fabulous student leaders organizing this free tutoring are Lorenzo M and Lucy H. Here is their message:

Dear Valley Families,

Last Friday we began to offer free after-school tutoring for fifth-grade students. These tutoring sessions are led by eighth-grade students who are eager to share their knowledge and experiences with younger students.

Sessions take place every Monday and Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. During this time, eighth-grade tutors assist fifth graders with homework, academic support, and any additional help they may need. Tutors also provide guidance about transitioning to middle school, including answering questions about lockers, classes, teachers, and daily school life.

Tutoring sessions are held in Ms. Suess’s classroom (Room 3) on Mondays and Ms. Gonzalez’s classroom (Room 28) on Thursdays. We are excited to introduce this program and look forward to creating a supportive and welcoming learning environment for our students.

Have a wonderful week!

Warmly,

Jessica Bledsoe
