Hello, Greater Austin Allergy Family!
Allergies have a frustrating way of overstaying their welcome. Just when one season begins to settle down, another wave of congestion, itchy eyes, coughing, or fatigue can appear leaving many people wondering why they never seem to feel completely well.
The answer is often more complex than a single pollen season. Central Texas presents a constantly evolving mix of outdoor and indoor allergens, and symptoms that look the same on the surface may have very different causes. Understanding those patterns can make the difference between repeatedly managing discomfort and developing a plan that provides meaningful, long-term relief.
In this month’s blog post, we explore what may be keeping your symptoms active, the clues your body may be giving you, and how identifying your individual triggers can bring greater clarity to your care.
We hope you find it helpful and that the months ahead bring fewer symptoms and more opportunities to enjoy feeling like yourself.
Stay Clear,

| | The Case of the Summer Sniffles | | |
A runny nose, congestion, sneezing, coughing, and fatigue can make allergies feel remarkably similar to a summer cold. A few clues, however, may help you tell them apart.
It may be allergies if your eyes, nose, or throat feel itchy; nasal drainage remains thin and watery; symptoms appear after time outdoors or around a familiar trigger; or they persist for weeks. Allergies do not typically cause a fever.
It may be a cold if your symptoms develop over several days and include a sore throat, mild body aches, headache, or fever. Most colds gradually improve, although congestion and coughing can sometimes linger for up to two weeks.
Because the symptoms can overlap, it isn’t always easy to know the difference. If your “summer cold” keeps returning, lasts longer than expected, or seems connected to certain environments, allergies may be the real culprit.

The beginning of a new school year is the perfect time to review your child’s allergy and asthma needs. A little preparation can help everyone feel more confident from your child and their teachers to the school nurse and after-school caregivers.
Before the first day, remember to:
- Update the school’s allergy, asthma, and anaphylaxis action plans.
- Check expiration dates on epinephrine auto-injectors, inhalers, and other medications.
- Make sure medications are clearly labeled and stored where they can be accessed quickly.
- Discuss food allergies and potential classroom exposures with teachers and school staff.
- Remind your child how to recognize symptoms and when to ask an adult for help.
- Include coaches, bus drivers, and after-school caregivers in the conversation when appropriate.
If your child needs updated forms, medication refills, or an appointment before school begins, contact our Greater Austin Allergy Team as soon as possible.
| Grilled Chicken, Peach & Avocado Salad | |
Dairy-Free | Gluten-Free | Egg-Free | Nut-Free
Fresh, colorful, and satisfying, this Grilled Chicken, Peach & Avocado Salad brings some of summer’s best flavors together in one easy dinner. Juicy peaches add a touch of sweetness, while grilled chicken and creamy avocado make it hearty enough for the whole family.
🛒 Ingredients:
For the salad:
- 1½ pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 2 ripe peaches, sliced
- 1 avocado, sliced
- 6 cups mixed greens
- 1 cucumber, thinly sliced
- 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
- ¼ small red onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Salt and black pepper to taste
For the citrus dressing:
- ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
- 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
- 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup or honey
- 1 small garlic clove, minced
- Salt and black pepper to taste
👩🏻🍳 Directions:
Brush the chicken with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill over medium-high heat for approximately 6–7 minutes per side, or until it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F. Allow it to rest for five minutes before slicing.
Whisk the dressing ingredients together in a small bowl. Arrange the mixed greens, cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, peaches, and avocado on a serving platter. Top with the sliced chicken, drizzle with the citrus dressing, and serve immediately.
Allergy-Friendly Tip: Always check labels on packaged ingredients and seasonings. Prepare the meal with clean utensils, cookware, and surfaces to help prevent cross-contact.
Serve it on a warm evening when you want something simple, nourishing, and full of flavor. For an easy variation, swap the peaches for nectarines or add your favorite seasonal vegetables. Serve the dressing on the side so everyone can customize their plate.

When allergy symptoms refuse to let up, the cause may not be one stubborn allergen. You could be reacting to several different triggers including tree pollen, grass, weeds, mold, dust mites, and pet dander.
These allergens don’t all peak at the same time. As exposure to one decreases, another may become more active. Indoor triggers can add another layer, making sneezing, congestion, itchy eyes, coughing, and postnasal drainage feel nearly constant.
Stop Guessing. Start Identifying Your Triggers.
Allergy testing can help uncover exactly what your immune system is reacting to. With clearer answers, your provider can develop a personalized plan that may include medications, targeted environmental changes, or allergen immunotherapy for long-term relief.
If you’re reacting to more than you realize, treating symptoms alone may never tell the whole story. Read our latest blog to learn how allergy triggers shift and overlap throughout the year and why your symptoms may continue long after spring has ended.
