RANGER CHECKPOINT

A Message from the Chairman:

Fellow Rangers and Supporters of the Ranger Community –

First, a heartfelt congratulations to the 2026 Ranger Hall of Fame inductees. Last week was full of enjoyable activities, and it was great to see so many members of the Ranger Community at Ft. Benning. It was especially wonderful to see so many of you visit YOUR National Ranger Memorial, particularly those who had the opportunity to visit for the first time.

The National Ranger Memorial Foundation will soon announce this year’s recipients of The Kenneth C. Leuer/Joseph S. Stringham Scholarship. This year we received a record number of applications, all of which were highly competitive. The National Ranger Memorial Foundation will very soon surpass over $1,000,000 in awarded scholarships to deserving Rangers and their family members. Let me be the first to say, "Congratulations!" to this year's recipients.

The entire foundation wishes everyone a very safe and happy holiday weekend as we celebrate our nation’s 250th Birthday. It is because of Rangers like you that we continue to enjoy the freedoms dreamed of and articulated by our founding fathers.

As always, thanks for your service to our nation and the Ranger Community.

Rangers Lead The Way!

Larry Burris

Brigadier General, US Army (Retired)

The Global War on Terrorism Memorial Foundation revealed the initial concepts for a permanent tribute on the National Mall to honor the generations of Americans who served in Afghanistan and Iraq following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Operation Warrior Hope: First Sergeant (Ret.) Jason Belford, Army Ranger and former First Sergeant at Fort Benning, Georgia, reached a breaking point in 2022 after two decades of military service. He spent 17 years fighting in the Global War on Terrorism, including 15 years in U.S. Army Special Operations. Years of combat deployments, personal loss, post-traumatic stress, and a difficult transition from the 75th Ranger Regiment gradually took their toll. Despite his reputation as a tough, resilient leader, Belford quietly battled depression, guilt, divorce, financial hardship, and the pain of being separated from his children.

On the day he attempted to take his own life, his weapon failed to fire. A series of timely interventions—including support from the Ranger Regiment and a late-night text from a friend—helped save him. By reaching out for help, Belford discovered he was not alone and that many fellow service members and Veterans were fighting similar battles.

Today, Belford shares his story to encourage Soldiers and Veterans to seek help, reminding them that even in their darkest moments, hope and support are often closer than they realize. He now works with Operation Warrior Hope, a suicide prevention initiative co-founded by Ken Branch, Charter Company Commander of B Company, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment.

Belford recently spoke at the Ranger Rendezvous, where he shared his journey of resilience

and highlighted resources that aided in his recovery, including The Way to Happiness, a common-sense moral guidebook that he recommends as a valuable tool for anyone's kit bag. One Purple Heart recipient after reading the book said:

"Day by day and precept by precept I found my life getting calmer and calmer...  I haven't felt this calm in a VERY long time."

The Fighting Eagles: Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Ed Marion, pictured with National Ranger Memorial Foundation Secretary Molly Stringham, spent more than two decades as an Army Sapper, a career that included 14 months in Mosul, Iraq, where his company moved along treacherous roads searching for and clearing IEDs.

As a platoon leader, Marion helped guide his unit through some of the war’s most hazardous work, clearing nearly 700 explosive devices and surviving almost 200 ambushes. In his memoir, The Fighting Eagles: An Account of the IED War in Iraq, he tells the story of his path into the Army, the realities of detecting and removing explosives, the burden combat placed on him and his men, and the comrades he lost along the way.

Woven through his account is a portrait of the leadership and resilience shaped by Ranger training, where he learned the mental toughness, physical fitness, and steadiness under pressure needed to endure combat and lead others through it. Order your copy at FightingEaglesAccountIED.

💍❤️ Ranger Fred Stuckey and his lovely wife, Tresina, hold a special place in Ranger Memorial history as the first couple ever married there on 7 July 2005. As they approach their 21st wedding anniversary, we are delighted to congratulate them and thank them for leading the way in starting a joyful tradition of love, commitment, and Ranger pride at the Memorial!🎉
