TCA 80th Annual Christmas Luncheon Recap

TCA's 80th Annual Christmas Luncheon Draws Record Crowd, Introduces Exciting Changes

The 80th Annual Toronto Construction Association (TCA) Christmas Luncheon proved to be a resounding success, with a record-breaking 2,600 attendees filling the sold-out Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) for a spectacular year-end celebration. From independent ticket buyers to industry giants like EllisDon, which purchased a remarkable 18 tables, the event brought together professionals from every corner of the construction industry in a festive and high-energy atmosphere.

This year’s luncheon marked a significant shift in programming with the introduction of legendary Canadian broadcaster and Hockey Night in Canada host, Ron MacLean, as the event’s keynote speaker. MacLean masterfully guided the event, captivating the audience with his charisma, wit, and heartfelt storytelling. Whether attendees were hockey fans or not, his presence elevated the luncheon to unprecedented levels of engagement and energy. MacLean’s dedication did not end when the program concluded; he graciously stayed afterward to chat and take photos with guests, solidifying his reputation as a consummate professional.

Major Sponsors Shine at the Event

United Rentals once again served as the Presenting Sponsor, impressing the audience with a dynamic video showcasing its brand’s values and achievements. United Rentals’ Craig Freeborn also took to the stage to help announce the winners of the Innovative Product Award, adding an exciting highlight to the afternoon.

Home Depot brought its signature flair to the event, sponsoring three photobooths, including a 360-degree booth that added a modern twist to the cocktail hour. The company also contributed a standout grand prize: an iPhone 16 Pro Max, valued at $2,000. The much-anticipated draw, conducted by Home Depot representative Amir Nezhat and Ron MacLean, saw Geoff Newman of Siemens Canada Ltd. walk away as the lucky winner.

Other notable sponsors included:

  • Roni Excavating / Roni Group of Companies
  • Rochon Building Corp.
  • Northfleet Group
  • Beedie Construction
  • RS Breakers

Their contributions helped create an unforgettable experience for all attendees.

TCA 2024 Innovative Product Award (IPA) Winners

The Toronto Construction Association (TCA) 2024 Innovative Product Award (IPA) winners were announced at The 2023 Buildings Show on Friday, December 6, 2024.

The IPA Award (formerly known as TIPTA) was established in 1994 by TCA and is open to any supplier demonstrating the development and/or the use of innovative technologies in their respective industries.

Congratulations to this year's top four winners:

First place winner: Provision Software Corporation

Product: Contract Review - Automated Risk Identification for Complex Construction Contracts

Provision is transforming the construction industry by addressing one of its most persistent challenges: managing risk and ensuring compliance within complex contractual frameworks. Our innovation lies in the development and application of a risk management platform specifically designed to automate high-impact pre-construction workflows. This platform not only simplifies the review process for major and non-major projects but also bridges the gap between technical and legal perspectives in contract management.

Our technology uniquely integrates automated document analysis, collaborative commenting, and risk identification features. These capabilities are tailored to handle the nuanced demands of construction contracts, including reconciling supplemental conditions, managing addenda, and identifying conflicting requirements across extensive documentation. By doing so, we enable general contractors, subcontractors, and other stakeholders to focus on strategic decision-making rather than labor-intensive manual reviews.

The importance of this innovation extends beyond operational efficiency. Construction projects collectively lose over half a trillion dollars annually due to delays and disputes. Provision mitigates these risks by creating a single source of truth for contractual documents, automating the identification of obligations, and providing actionable insights. In an industry marked by resource constraints—whether at small firms juggling multiple roles or large enterprises stretched thin across portfolios—Provision empowers teams to proactively address risks and avoid costly errors.

For the industry, our platform represents a significant leap forward in leveraging technology to solve entrenched problems. Provision stands out not only for its functionality but also for its user-centric design, enabling both legal and non-legal experts to derive value without steep learning curves. With our tool, contractors are better equipped to bid on the right projects, manage compliance seamlessly, and ultimately deliver projects on time and within budget.

Internally, the development of Provision has reinforced our mission to be the most trusted and effortless risk management platform in construction. It aligns with our company’s goals of driving scalable growth while maintaining a sharp focus on de-risking our clients' operations. As we continue to innovate, Provision is set to redefine what is possible in construction risk management, ensuring that our clients and the broader industry thrive in a highly competitive and complex landscape.

Second Place Winner: Doka Canada Ltd.

Product: DokaXact Load and Pressure Sensors

Concrete formwork must not only shape the concrete but also withstand the hydrostatic pressure and loads from the liquid concrete until it hardens. Traditionally, formwork is designed to a specific pressure rating, but actual pressure can vary significantly based on factors like wall height, temperature, and mix design. This variability makes it challenging to determine the optimal concrete filling speed.

To address this issue, Doka has developed innovative wireless sensors that are installed at various heights on the concrete formwork. These sensors monitor horizontal pressure and loading during concrete placement in real-time. This technology enhances safety by alerting when the formwork’s pressure limit is reached, and often allows for faster concreting, thereby saving time and reducing costs for contractors.

Third Place Winner: Quantum Passivhaus

Product: Prefabricated Overcladding Panels for Retrofit Applications - Savannah & Woodland systems

Quantum Passivhaus’ development of a line of prefabricated over-cladding systems (Savannah for fire resistent enclosures & Woodland for wood frame enclosures) to be used for building retrofits was in response to an increasingly urgent need to develop systems that can make our existing building stock more energy efficient and weather resilient while also reducing the carbon footprint from existing buildings (both operational and in embodied carbon). Retrofitting is seen as a win/win to refurbish older buildings and reduce carbon carbon input by avoiding demolition waste. Agencies and organizations such as Natural Resources Canada and The Atmospheric Fund have established accelerator programs to increase the uptake of retrofits and the use of prefabricated components that will assist in the need to rapidly improve our existing building stock by 2050 to meet our climate commitments.

The Atmospheric Fund in 2023 issued a RFSQ (Request for Supplier Qualification) to evaluate and increase the availability of technically vetted prefabricated overcladding systems for retrofits in the market. The intent was to pre-qualify up to 17 providers in 2 categories. Quantum responded to this by supplying the technical information requested to be considered for pre-qualification in the “pre-assembled” overcladding system. The technical information was comprehensive and is listed in our response to question number. Quantum also included some of its own novel approaches in the panel development including developing our own very durable rainscreen system and panel joins which were tested for water and air penetrations and developing our own attachment systems that are simple, safe and durable with ability to check them during maintenance.

Quantum Passivhaus was the sole company pre-qualified under in the “pre-assembled” overcladding panel solution category. Results are posted in the October 2024 report published by The Atmospheric Fund (Section 3.3). Since this initial application Quantum has also extended its line of prefabricated retrofit systems to include additional dimensions and insulating values extending its opportunity to meet variable projects goals as it is recognized that larger buildings will not need as much additional insulation as smaller buildings, and roof retrofit roof overcladding panels are now undergoing testing.

Quantum is pleased to bring this to market. We anticipate this line of retrofit panels will offer solutions to builders, owners, designers and developers alike. Our panels are a tool to convert aging buildings with high operating cost and low comfort to those with lower operating cost, greater climate resilience/durability, and greater occupant comfort. We also are most pleased to join many agencies in supporting a local, regional and national goals to decarbonize existing buildings to meet our collective 2050 climate goals.

Project of the Month

Centennial College expansion achieves WELL Silver certification

EllisDon has announced the Centennial College Block A Expansion has achieved WELL Silver Certification under the WELL building standard, which celebrates building sustainably with a focus on human health.

WELL Certification also focuses on building structures that prioritize and enhance the well-being of all occupants and address a range of issues from mitigating burnout, to increasing movement, to safe air and drinking water, explains a release.

The project added a new five-story building with a lower level, providing approximately 136,000 square feet of new space and 16,085 square feet of renovated area. The project was designed to address an anticipated shortage of classrooms and to furnish the college with advanced facilities for its academic pursuits, EllisDon states.

The expansion included three elements: the construction of a new building for student services and office areas; partial renovation of the existing A Block structure from 1994; and enhancements to the exteriors of both buildings. The new building featured mass timber construction, housed administrative services and academic spaces for the School of Engineering Technology and Applied Science, as well as food service areas and an Indigenous Commons.

Its design integrated Indigenous perspectives, adopting the “two-eyed seeing” concept that melds Indigenous knowledge with Western science.
