FIRST GRADERS READ OVER 1,000 BOOKS!
First Grade recently surpassed their goal (reading 1,000 books as a whole class) on Epic, an online library. They reached this goal primarily by researching animals and their habitats in their thematic units. This includes ocean, polar, forest, wetlands, and rainforest habitats.
In their latest rainforest unit, students were proud to share their improved reading skills with a reader’s theatre performance of “The Great Kapok Tree.” They were encouraged to collaborate, increase fluency, and boost public speaking and active listening skills. Each student chose an animal from the rainforest, researched it, and created an informative brochure to share with staff and parents. Their enthusiasm and joy of reading is a beautiful sight.
Way to go First Grade!

AP ENGLISH LANGUAGE STUDENTS COLLABORATE WITH SECOND GRADERS
Victoria Dryden's AP English Language class joined Lisa Vance's Second Grade class on Tuesday, May 23 to help her students fine-tune their storybook writing projects. They turned the Second Grade classroom into the Lucky Laguna Owls Publishing Company. Everyone worked together to refine text, draft About the Author pages, and brainstorm ideas for illustrations.
We love the cross-grade-level collaboration!

FOURTH GRADE LEADERS SHINE ON THE LOWER SCHOOL STUDENT COUNCIL
Congratulations to Fourth Grade students Sophy, Rio, David, and Natana for their inspiring leadership on our Lower School student council! The team successfully partnered with Art Instructor Ms. Guay to finalize a second Buddy Bench, which will be unveiled at our final Tecolote Tuesday assembly. In addition, they organized a party for the Big/Little Buddy groups and planned a Lower School "dress down day" in May, including a "shoe free" afternoon for the fourth grade. Inspired by their time at the Lower School, they also collaborated with the faculty to organize a special "Fourth Grade Farewell" on our last day of school together.
The purpose of Lower School Student Council is to add another inclusive leadership opportunity for our Lower School students, specifically for our fourth grade “seniors” on campus. Serving on Student Council also helps our Owls hone their leadership skills as part of Laguna’s programming. All fourth graders serve on the Student Council, rotating in terms throughout the year.
