September 2025 Newsletter | | |
Established in 2007 as a public, nonprofit organization, the Latino Leadership Council seeks to advance cultural strength, leadership, and well-being within the Latino Community.
In this issue, we’re excited to share highlights of our Promotores, upcoming events, and job opportunities that help strengthen our impact across the region.

| With the help of Sierra Foothills Unitarian Universalists, we’ve been truly blessed to support our families with free school supplies and clothes. Seeing the smiles and excitement reminds us that sometimes the smallest tools can make the biggest difference. Together, we’re helping students feel prepared, confident, and ready to succeed. | | |
This month, we’re proud to highlight Lissett Carrasquel, a dedicated Promotora and Coordinator. Lissett’s leadership and compassion shine through her work, creating a nurturing environment where families feel supported and children thrive.
“In the Mami y Yo program, we create a preschool-style setting for pregnant women and children ages 0 to 5, focused on literacy, math, science, and art. Our goal is to empower moms to engage in their child’s learning, both in class and at home.” - Lissett
Thanks to Lisette’s guidance, Mami y Yo has grown into a safe and welcoming space where children explore learning through play, and mothers gain the confidence to support their child’s development beyond the classroom.
Thank you, Lissett, for your dedication and heart in helping families build brighter futures!

This month, families participated in engaging virtual activities, including reading practice to learn and recognize their names, as well as an art project creating colorful paper plate sea turtle collages. These activities not only support early learning and creativity but also help strengthen connections between children and their families.
Please note: Mami y Yo will be held virtually for the month of September.

| | Youth Ambassador Spotlight | | |
Our Youth Ambassador, Ava De La Torre, is launching Building Support, a community-driven project aimed at providing care packages and legal resource materials to immigrant families in need.
With your support, Ava will assemble reusable bags filled with Hygiene products.
These bags will offer families both immediate relief and long-term support. As a thank you, individual and organizational donors will have the option to include their name or logo on the bags, publicly recognizing their role in uplifting our community. Let’s come together to promote justice, compassion, and community care.
To contribute or learn more, contact Ava at ava.delatorre@gmail.com or 916-305-8587.

Interested in Strengthening Your Family Through the Parent Project?
Are you a parent navigating the challenges of raising children in a bicultural environment? The Parent Project is a 16-week course designed to support families like yours through practical tools, community connection, and meaningful growth. Throughout the course, parents explore topics such as healthy communication, youth mental health, substance use, and gang prevention in a supportive, culturally informed setting. While parents learn, their children participate in parallel youth groups focused on leadership, self-esteem, and resilience.
Our next cohort will begin in January 2026 in Lincoln!
Here’s what past participants have shared:
“I have participated in Parent Project two times during the different life stages of my children, and in each class, I have learned different tools to continue communicating better with my children.” — Maria
“We have brought all our children to these Parent Project classes. We, as a family, have learned how to better communicate with each other and find solutions for our family’s differences.” — Sara
If you're looking to build stronger relationships at home and connect with other families on a similar journey, the Parent Project could be the perfect next step.

| | Entre Amigos y Chiquillos | | Our youth went through a successful virtual cooking class that brought together a great group of participants. During the session, they learned how to make healthy yogurt bowls with fresh fruits and granola, exploring both nutrition and fun in the kitchen. The class was engaging and interactive, giving youth hands-on experience while encouraging healthy eating habits! | | |
