CURRICULUM SPOTLIGHT

Your voice heard: Strategic updates

follow recent AE curriculum survey

We want to send a huge thank you to the 580 members and volunteers who completed our first of what will be an annual AE Curriculum Survey! With a nearly even split between AEOs and AEMs represented in the feedback, we have a firm understanding of the needs across our entire member base.

High Quality, Clear Path Forward

The data confirms the strength of our aerospace education content: 80% of respondents are "Likely or Very Likely" to recommend our materials, and 77% rated the overall quality as "Very Good or Excellent."

However, our biggest challenge is delivery. We learned that the largest group of non-users stopped because they had trouble finding what they needed on our current website and multiple platforms.

As one member noted: "I can find other free resources online much quicker than navigating the LMS for CAP."

Strategic Fix: Absorb Migration

To fix this critical "Access Gap," we are prioritizing a full migration of all resources to the Absorb LMS in the new year! This consolidation will immediately enable you to use lesson tags and filtering tools to find the resources you need easily and efficiently.

Modernization is Underway

We also heard your requests for greater efficiency and content rigor:

  • More Digital Tools (presentations, videos) to reduce prep time
  • Better alignment with traditional class block schedules
  • More advanced or high school-based lessons

The great news is that we're already implementing these changes! Our revised lessons in Absorb are clearly labeled with instructional time, national standards, and handouts. We've also started adding dynamic, interactive presentations to our most popular lessons.

We'll keep adding these features to ensure our program is both high-quality and easy to teach, supporting every classroom and squadron.

Thank you for helping us build the future of Aerospace Education.

PROGRAM UPDATES

Winners announced for the 2025

National High-Altitude Balloon Challenge

In case you missed it in last month's newsletter, awards were announced for the fifth annual CAP Aerospace Education National High-Altitude Balloon Challenge (HABC). The STEM competition drew over 100 teams from 41 wings and all eight CAP regions nationwide, with more than 1,000 cadets and 250 adult leaders participating. The six-month competition concluded in November with the announcement of the Col. Joe Kittinger Cup winner and the $5,000 prize sponsored by Mrs. Sherry Kittinger in memory of the late Col. Kittinger, the Challenge’s ambassador and benefactor. An additional 37 teams earned Air & Space Forces Association (AFA) unit grants as individual category winners. These grants will enable the cadets to pursue and participate in other STEM programs. Congratulations to all team winners! Read more at the links below.

AE Safety Check

(These safety briefs are things to think about as you lead or participate in an Aerospace Education activity. The writer of this monthly feature is Lt. Col. Karen Cooper, who works in safety and risk management on the AE National Headquarters Staff and is also Northeast Region DCS/Aerospace Education.)

EXTENSION CORD AND POWER STRIP SAFETY

Extension cords and power strips are common equipment when running an AE activity. However, when using them, you should still be careful. Plugging one into another is a bad idea because it can lead to overloading, overheating, and fire hazards by increasing the total power draw and potentially stressing the wires This practice, known as "daisy-chaining," increases electrical resistance and the risk of overloading the circuit, which can damage equipment and lead to a fire. To get a longer reach, you should use a single, longer (and possibly a heavy duty) extension cord that meets your needs instead of linking multiple cords together. You can also use additional outlets but still limit each outlet to only one power strip.

If you have a safety topic you would like to be included in this space, please email kcooper@ner.cap.gov.
